Day Five

Genesis7:6

Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came upon the earth. 7 And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him went into the ark to escape the waters of the flood.

I'm not getting any younger, you mutter to yourself as you close the door on yet another judging and unkind neighbor who sat at your kitchen table, as they have day after day, criticizing your whole way of life. Criticizing your ancient and faithful husband for following God's excellent but nevertheless bizarre command to build a boat the size of several buildings in the middle of a desert with no water. Every evening he comes in, your husband that is, hands all calloused, sweaty, ego cracked and on the edge of shattering, to ask you the same fifteen questions.

'Do you think I'm crazy?' 'Do you think it will ever start to rain?' 'Do I look stupid out there building the boat?'

And you have sat there day after day saying, 'Of course you don't look stupid, dear. Everything is going to be alright.” Secretly biting your nails and imploring God to bring the rain.

So when the zoo arrives, the added and insane amount of work in no way diminishes your sense of relief and joy. Neither of you, God be praised, appear to be crazy. And then the rain and the stone in the pit of your stomach as you watch all of creation die and see for the first time that you are Safe.

So life is a wretched zoo and your husband works too much and there's not enough money and nobody understands you. God has rescued you and you are safe with him forever.
