Birthday Notes

Birthday Notes October 15, 2016

I think we ended up with a very successful tea party. Realized, as I was surveying the teacups, that this is the first real party we’ve had here. We’ve indulged in some very nice meals, but haven’t really settled into the usual rhythm of birthdays and other feasts.

We use our china rather a lot. Not just on Christmas and Thanksgiving, but Easter, New Years, sometimes on Valentine’s Day, girl birthdays, and sometimes when we just feel like it.

The menu included scones, cucumber sandwiches, cocunut macaroons (which I now need to learn how to make, so delicious) and mango cobbler.

Mango Cobbler isn’t, of course, the sort of dessert you expect at a fancy tea. If you’d come over you might have been looking around for a cake. But see, I stink at the whole question of cake. Every cake I make is a cake wreck. And so the children have finally stopped asking for birthday cakes, because of how embarrassing and sad it is, and ask for Ameican Fruit Desserts (look towards the end of your Joy of Cooking). You know, cobbler. But also pie, which is its own chapter. Cobbler done with mango is really worth all the trouble. You just buy some large mangos, and there you are.

So, now we’ll keep partying, because today is the actual birthday.  The road rolls on forever but the party never ends.
