No. No, that didn’t happen.
Pope Francis tweeted this:
Dialogue is born when I am capable of recognizing others as a gift of God and accept they have something to tell me.
— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) September 21, 2016
What does that mean in reference to Liberation Theology? Well, what he ‘tweeted’ is something you find a lot of in liberation theology, but also in a lot of patristics and mystical theology. Dialogue, entering into it, is something we often fail at when it comes to evangelization. Glorifying God in our encounter with another person begins, not with imposing and condemning, as we often do, but with “recognizing others as a gift of God” and letting them have their word.
Really, a lot of liberation theology is just theology in the language spoken by the poor and those who love them. Liberation theology is nothing to be afraid of. If you don’t see liberation theology in this, check out Laudato si’. If you still don’t see a connection, then you may consider looking up some liberation theology for your personal reading.
That said: Read some Enrique Dussel and Gustavo Gutiérrez today. Treat yo self.
