Planned Parenthood president, Cecile Richards, published a letter yesterday stating that Big Pink won’t take direct monies for selling the body parts of babies it has killed during abortions. Do you believe them?

I talk about this, from the viewpoint of someone who once allied with Planned Parenthood as a pro choice advocate in a post I wrote for the National Catholic Register.

Here’s part of what I said:

Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, posted a letter yesterday. She announced that Planned Parenthood would no longer accept money for supplying the body parts of aborted babies to researchers, research facilities and their middlemen.

Personally, I’m not convinced. The reason I’m not convinced is my personal experience with Planned Parenthood and the impressions I formed of them during the time I was their political ally run counter to this action.

The truth is, Planned Parenthood cares about money. Planned Parenthood really cares about money.

I was a naive, true-believing 22-year-old from the wrong side of the river when I first encountered Planned Parenthood’s leadership. My piece of the situation was an ardent belief that (and I’m explaining this beyond what I would have said at that time) the sexual double standard and misogyny were such that abortion was absolutely necessary to save women’s lives and allow them to function as full human beings. I had a friend who almost died from an illegal abortion. I well remember the terror of this situation and how hard it was to get medical care to save her life.

That was a watershed event for me. The horror of it trumped every other consideration in my thinking about abortion for a long, long time. That’s how I came to advocate for legal abortion, how I came to be the Oklahoma Director for NARAL, and how I came to sit across the table with Planned Parenthood muckety-mucks from around the country at various banquets, seminars and such. Without exception, the first thing a member of Planned Parenthood’s governing boards would ask me was “How are you funded?” Meaning, how was Oklahoma NARAL funded.

This wasn’t something that came up casually, later in the conversation, and it didn’t happen once in a while. Every single conversation I ever remember having with them began with an introduction, followed by the question “How are you funded?”

  1. I listened closely and could see lots of wiggle room. Why PP has the protection they have, I do not know.
They do not do anything for free and I bet a lot of the Medicaid payments are bogus. What’s to keep receivers of baby body parts from making donations?
Why can’t we redirect funds to community health centers?

  2. I met Cecile ‘ s mother Ann, the great governor of Texas, a couple of times. Once was at the opening of her Fort Worth office. She was working the line, all gregarious, then got to little ol’ nervous me and switched gears to a kind, gentle hand that set me at ease. My impression was of a truly kind person. Don’t see it in her daughter.

Well, PP will certainly find a way to finesse the money. That’s my
    My opinion

One of the worst things you can do when engaging an opponent, political or otherwise, is to mischaracterize who it is you’re actually up against. This will lead you to erroneous assumptions which in turn lead to misguided actions, which can be ineffective at best and counterproductive at worst.

So, what is the true face of your opposition? Are you dealing with an amoral agent whose prime motivation is greed, or are you dealing with somebody who actually believes in what they are doing?

Because if its the later, then you guys are wasting your time trying to catch PP in a “gotcha!” moment. Money, while important, is ultimately just a means to an end. Its not worth the risk, to even show the appearance of misconduct, just to pad the bottom line.

Its been, how many state-level investigations now? Even the latest congressional hearings, for all their theater, turned up nothing.

Have you seen the documentary “After Tiller”? If you haven’t, you should; its on Netflix. I’m not saying this because I think its going to change your mind about abortion; however, before trying to depict abortion providers in a certain way, you first have to see how they see themselves.

  4. Absolutely. An organization that considers the murder of innocent children a sacrament certainly can be trusted to keep its word.

This reminds me of when I wake up in the middle of the night to hear my cat clawing on my favorite chair.
I order her to stop and she let’s out a little meow but I know she’s sitting there in the dark with her claws hooked into the fabric waiting for me to go back to sleep so she can carry on with her high jinx.

Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry are waiting and hoping that we’ll all go back to sleep so the slaughter can continue unabated. I knew there was a point to my cat story. 🙂

This is a thoroughly corrupt organization. It can’t be trusted.
