Pro Life Monday.
How many people do you have to kill before you’re not pro life anymore?
When a woman dies because she was denied medical care due to a poorly written pro life law that the Supreme Court has refused to overturn and legislators refuse to amend, her death is judicial and legislative murder.
I am demonstrably and undeniably pro life by the definition that right wing Republicans seek to apply to the issue. I passed more pro life laws than any other member of the Oklahoma legislature.
I have been picketed, smeared and almost censured by my own political party for passing pro life laws.
I had what Republicans in Congress have demonstrated that they are willing to destroy America to avoid: A well-funded primary election opponent who tried to defeat me at the polls. That opponent was recruited to run against me specifically because I am pro life.
I did what today’s Republicans in Congress — sleazy, lying cowards that they are — don’t have the spine to do. I stepped out of line and did what I believed was right.
I know that the unborn child is a human being, and I do not, will not, kill them. But I do not consider myself part of the pro life movement that I am seeing right now.
The reason for that is simple: I think every human being has an inherent, God-given, right to life, and that includes women.
A lot of the pro life laws that we passed — including some of the laws that I passed myself — need to be either rescinded completely or extensively re-written to protect the lives of women. In addition to that, new laws need to be written to provide the kind of care and support that women need to give life to their babies.
Instead of cutting Medicaid, it needs to be expanded.
Instead of blocking mandatory paid maternity leave, it should be the law of the land.
Instead of cutting child care, it needs to be provided free of cost.
Instead of raising taxes on working people to give billionaires a tax cut, we need to increase the tax exemptions for families with children.
No woman should be denied medical care when she is suffering from a miscarriage or a botched abortion.
No woman should fear being put in prison for having an abortion. That alone greatly increases the chances she will die. If a woman dies from a botched abortion, are any “pro life” Republicans calling for us to execute the father of the baby?
Of course not. But they are perfectly willing to execute the mother by letting her bleed out in a hospital parking lot.
No woman anywhere, ever, should be afraid she will have to face going to prison for having a miscarriage. That is happening in this country, and it is due entirely to the hatred of women in today’s psychotic Republican Party.
Today’s Republican Party is not the Republican Party you once supported. It is not conservative, and it is not pro life.
Today’s Republican Party is corrupt, self-righteous, cruel and totally indifferent to the suffering of the American people. It is the enemy of democracy and the rule of law.
It supports rapists and sexual predators, and appears to be just fine with skyrocketing maternal death rates.
I oppose what is happening in America today. I oppose it because I am so pro life that I think that every human being is made in the Image and Likeness of God and we may not kill them.
Except in the case of self defense, no one has the right to deliberately kill another person.
I won’t kill people. I won’t help you kill people. I won’t stand by while my government kills people.
Life begins at conception, but it doesn’t end at birth. The lives of women are just as important as the lives of men.
Laws that allow women to die from lack of medical care for any reason are legislative and judicial murder.
Today’s Republicans love to tell the world how holy they are.
They get off on prayer breakfasts and big public displays of their piety. Nobody loves to show off the crosses on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday more than today’s Republicans. They wear big shiny crosses to their press appearances while they tell one obvious lie after another and bow down to a sexual predator as if he was their Baal.
But nothing says blasphemy quite like proclaiming how you are God’s chosen while you support the legislative and judicial murder of America’s women and girls.
