Senator Gary Peters did something I never indulged in during all my years in public office. He told a deeply personal, wrenching story about a family tragedy in a public forum.  He and his wife faced the decision to terminate a much-wanted pregnancy because his wife had developed a uterine infection that would kill her if the pregnancy continued. There is nothing phony about the situation that Senator Peters described.  Almost exactly the same thing happened to me during one... Read more

Both Donald and Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19. I am assuming that this also means that everyone who was at the first debate, including Joe and Jill Biden, were exposed. I assume that Vice President Pence may also have been exposed.  We should pray for every single one of these people, as well as their families and those who have had contact with them.  We need to pray together as a people that the Trumps and Trump staffer Hope... Read more

There are days when I miss my mother so much, it aches. Grief is a slow moving sickness and there is not drug to “fix” it. When it comes to grief, you have to just work your way through it as best you can. Mothers, in particular, are hard to lose. This old song isn’t about mothers, but it describes what they are to most of us really well. Your parents are the people who are always on your side... Read more

This hymn has a powerful story of suffering, grief and faith behind it. It was written by Horatio Spafford. His wife and four daughters were shipwrecked on a trip to England from America and all four of his daughters were lost. Spafford wrote this hymn on his way to England t be with his wife after the tragedy. When you know that, it gives the words so much more meaning. I think of it as a hymn for troubled times.... Read more
