As I sit here working on our tax return for 2008, I would like to take a moment to thank you, my fellow tax-payers. I am not one of those people who will say to you that we have all these children and “have never taken a penny from the government.” Who are those people kidding anyway? We get a nice chunk of change every spring when we file our taxes. A chunk that is paid for by you, my fellow Americans. You pay it in, and we clean up. The only consolation I have to offer you is that in 18 years or so, you’ll get it back and then some. Think of it as a long term investment. You pay us for our large family that we raise to be productive members of society, and then all these children join the workforce and subsidize your retirement through their social security taxes.
Again, thanks for the check this spring. It’s a good one this year. We’ll be using it to buy a car for the Computer Guy since we are now tired of being a one car family. See how well that works? You pay taxes, we get a check, we buy a car, which helps the auto industry who then pays taxes and the cycle repeats itself. It may not be the best system, but it’s the one we’ve got.
Incidentally, did you know that the amount of tax that our forefathers revolted against England about came to less than 2% of the average person’s income? Can you imagine paying less than 2% in taxes? Something to think about.
