Why You Should Never Say: “I Just Want to Make You Happy.”

Why You Should Never Say: “I Just Want to Make You Happy.” April 24, 2015

If we take our vows seriously – til death do us part – that means that me not putting the dirty dishes into the washer is not enough to call it quits. That means that Catherine not picking up socks from the floor is not enough to call it quits. It means that anything that comes your way short of one of you kicking the bucket is not enough. (Of course, there are Scriptural reasons for divorce – not judging people who’ve been through those hard times.) But many times today, people sort of “outgrow” each other. They say they are no longer… wait for it… happy.

Well, maybe if we took “happiness” off our cultural pedestal, we could see that we’re called to something higher and better. Though it’s not a guarantee on this earth, joy just might be a by-product.
