Two Little Boys

By: Shane Phipps

Two little boys were born one day

Back in June of ‘98

One in Iran, one in Utah

Proudest dads you ever saw

When John was born you’d never know

Oh, the places he would go

And Reza’s mom could not foresee

Just what he’d turn out to be

They grew up half a world away

But could not keep their fates at bay

Their paths should have never crossed

But now they’re both forever lost

John was taught the Bible well

He learned of Heaven and of Hell

And he was led to believe

That all other faiths deceive

Reza studied the Koran

Learned to distrust folks like John

Obeyed his government’s commands

And now he sleeps beneath the sands

They learned what they were told to learn

Became good citizens in turn

They took up guns and gave up toys

Now mothers mourn two little boys

Two little boys were born today

As their mothers fret and pray

They see the writing on the wall

Before their babies learn to crawl

They will learn what they are taught

Until their minds are welded shut

So they’ll show up when the time comes

To lay down toys and pick up guns

They learned what they were told to learn

Became good citizens in turn

They took up guns and gave up toys

Now mothers mourn two little boys
