Lauten was fired for saying something dumb? That’s dumb.

The silly woman who spouted off about Obama’s daughters has resigned:

Elizabeth Lauten, the communications director for Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-Tenn.), resigned Monday following a Facebook post that criticized Malia and Sasha Obama’s appearance at the annual White House turkey pardon ceremony, according to NBC News.

The Facebook comment that got her fired:

Dear Sasha and Malia, I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play. Then again your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the ‘good role model’ department. Nevertheless, stretch yourself. Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly don’t make faces during televised public events.

Wut? I don’t know what kind of bars Lauten has been to lately, but I don’t think Sasha and Malia’s outfits would get them a very good spot. Here’s what they were wearing:

I guess the skirts are kind of short, but they’re not trashy or ugly or classless or a bad example.

And geez louise, so at one point during a pointless ceremony on Thanksgiving, they look bored to be on TV for the ten millionth time. They are kids. Lay the heck off. That should have been the policy for the Bush girls, for Chelsea Clinton when Bill was in office, same for Sarah Palin’s kids, and so on, forever. Family, especially kids, are not fair game, period.

But this staffer Lauten had to resign over it? After she apologized? Nonsense. Such nonsense. Let’s give people the freedom to say dumb things and then apologize and be ashamed, and then let’s move on. We are not making the world a better place by putting tighter and tighter shrink wrap on the opinions that people are entitled to embarrass themselves with.  Fighting extreme and stupid overreactions with other extreme and stupid overreactions makes the U.S. look like a bored, spoiled child with nothing better to do than pinch himself and then cry over it.
