Dealing with church members perpetually enraged due to Fox Geezer Syndrome is a pastoral challenge. Pastors are looking for some way of reaching these folks. They are suffering from a spiritual sickness, and pastors want to bring them some relief. "Pastor Provides Pastoral Care" is not news. Nor is "Shock-jock Says Something Shocking" newsworthy. But if the "Morning Zoo Crew" dispenses with its usual crude antics in the wake of a tragedy, rallying community support for the victims, that would be news -- a reversal of the usual roles, something surprising and unexpected. By the same token, when religious leaders respond to tragedy by making the sort of shocking statements one usually expects to hear from Zoo-Crew shock-jocks, that's news too. Read more

Mainstream evangelical leaders, magazines, bloggers and spokespeople were mostly reluctant to criticize the appalling post-Newtown statements by their social conservative peers Mike Huckabee, James Dobson, Bryan Fischer and Frankling Graham, That's understandable. Their constituency, after all, is the same white evangelical populace that watches Huckabee on Fox News, listens to Dobson and Fischer on the radio, and that inexplicably regards Franklin Graham as the legitimate heir to his father's legacy. Read more
