You will never guess who the Obama Administration’s latest target is?
The Little Sisters of the Poor.
Yes, really. The President and his bureaucratic allies have decided to challenge the religious freedom of a group of nuns who have devoted their entire lives to caring for impoverished elderly people around the world.
The Little Sisters, whose ministry is funded solely through their tradition of begging, simply want to be able to live out their faith and not be forced to violate their consciences. Meet the Little Sisters for yourself in this video:
The case is complicated but basically the Little Sisters of the Poor do not want to be forced by Obama’s bureaucrats to help provide birth control that works similarly to abortion to their employees. And now they have taken their fight all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, asking that they be allowed to live by their religious beliefs.
So what is at stake? David French says it well:
This case is about far more than free contraceptives for employees at religious nonprofits. At its heart, it’s about the place of religious conscience in American life. If a group of Catholic nuns can be dragooned into facilitating the sexual revolution because bureaucratic rulemaking trumps essential civil liberties, then religious freedom as a distinct American freedom is nearly extinguished.
It seems like a pretty simple and fundamental right to me.
Is he going to make the Muslims eat pork so the pig farmers don’t go out of business?
No matter what your religious beliefs are, if you are an American who loves freedom and democracy, it seems like you would want to protect the rights of the Little Sisters to live out their faith.
But we will see what the Court decides. They heard oral arguments last week and will release their decision some time this summer.
One thing is for certain, though. The Little Sisters of the Poor are amazing women who are quite literally being the hands and feet of Christ. I am glad that they are standing for what they believe in and are demanding religious freedom for all Americans!
