We now live in a politically correct society that will not allow anyone to have an opinion without facing harsh criticism, particularly when it comes to race. NFL star Cam Newton is the latest pop culture icon to be on the receiving end of having an opinion that goes against the grain.
In a recent GQ interview, the Carolina Panthers quarterback was asked if he views criticisms from NFL fans as racist. Newton said, “It’s not racism. Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion.”
Not satisfied, GQ pressed, asking, “So if it’s not that, what is it, do you think?”
“I’ll let you be the judge. I don’t look at it like that,” Newton replied. “I look at it like some people have certain beliefs, and I have my own belief, and we can agree to disagree on certain things. But this is what makes sports so amazing, that we can start a discussion around a table, in the newspaper, in the magazines, that will get people’s attention. And that’s what sports does.”
The interview turned to something Newton said earlier this year: “I’m an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare me to.”
“I don’t want this to be about race, because it’s not. It’s not,” he insisted.
And then he said the unbelievable to a leftist’s ears:
“Like, we’re beyond that. As a nation.”
“You really think so?” the interviewer asked in disbelief.
“Yeah. I mean, you bring it to people’s attention. But after that, that’s it,” Newton said plainly.
But it wasn’t just GQ that was flabbergasted by Newton’s brush off of the systemic racism in America allegation. Twitter outrage jumped on Cam’s case, too:
If Cam Newton doesn’t check himself, he’s going to become the next OJ Simpson. You are still black, bruh.

This makes me incredibly sad. The NFL finally made Cam Newton denounce who he is https://t.co/e3V35sKk0M

Take away the fame & the money let’s see if Cam Newton still thinks we are beyond racism.

Can we give it a rest, people? Can we stop with the Uncle Tom allegations, the token allegations, that demand every black person have the same racist attitude as the Black Lives Matter crowd? The only reason racism is “still alive” is because of these people giving it new life. Otherwise, we could all get on with our peaceful lives.
