Comedian Dave Chappelle might have broken the liberal black celebrity mold when he showed up to a town hall meeting in his home town of Yellow Springs, Ohio to praise the local police and give them a word of encouragment in finding a new chief.

“I gotta be honest,” Chappelle said in video posted online. “For me, personally, the police have been actually sensitive to my situation. I know on at least two occasions where they protected my own well-being — my personal well-being — unsolicited from me. So, I appreciate that.”

Currently, the small liberal town is looking for a new police chief to replace the one who resigned after a New Year’s Eve incident brought accusations of police brutality and a front-page story at The New York Times. At the annual party in the city, a drunken 29-year-old black man became aggressive and threatening towards cops and was subsequently slammed to the ground. The gathered crowd erupted in chaos. The man was able to slip away after attempting to grab the officer’s Taser and a foot chase ensued. An elderly white woman was even arrested for trying to obstruct the officers from the suspect. Apparently, the chief was too embarrassed and couldn’t take the heat.

Chappelle was at the NYE party with his kids and his “friends and neighbors,” he added:

“In all fairness, the crowd was drunk because it was New Year’s Eve. And I left early because nobody felt completely right. So, I’m trying to be balanced and fair.”

However, instead of showing up to the town hall and delivering anti-police rhetoric, Chappelle simply called the incidednt a “huge gaffe” and encouraged the town to find a good replacement.

“I would beseech the council to look deeply; to look hard… because this is a golden opportunity,” Chappelle continued. “In this Trump era, this is an opportuniyt to show everybody that local politics rein supreme. We can make our corner of the world outstanding.”

Wouldn’t it be great if everyone on the Left was this level headed?
