Early yesterday I was naively thinking: let’s pretend a Catholic priest who happened to be white and his mostly white congregation, were carrying a statue of Mary in solemn procession around the Lincoln Memorial, complete with altar severs in surplices and chanting of the Rosary in Latin. And then video was released of a big gang of Native American youths, wearing the insignia of their tribe, surrounding the priest and shouting at him with what sounded like mock gibberish... Read more

Today is Martin Luther King Junior Day. Today is the day that bloggers are supposed to think of something inoffensive to say about Martin Luther King, Junior. And, as a white woman, I don’t know exactly what to say. I’m probably supposed to say something bland and cheerful about darkness not being able to drive out darkness, without giving the context of the quote. I’m likely expected to talk about  “What Martin Luther King would have wanted” in this... Read more

Last night I couldn’t sleep, as is often the case in dark January. I was downstairs on the sofa, worrying, when somebody commented on my blog. He said I was “assuming the intentions” of the Covington Catholic students, and I’m not saying I wasn’t, though I tried hard not to. Obviously I could be wrong in my assessment of the video I watched with my own two eyes. Anybody could be. I just refuse to be gaslit by... Read more

Just once I’d like to go viral for a piece of writing I’m proud of. I like to write short stories and thought I’d be a novelist someday; I also write meditations on prayers and antiphons and the like. But when my posts get shared over a thousand times, it’s always because Mrs. Pezzulo has gotten angry with conservatives again. I just don’t like politics. I like to talk about other things. Anyway, I gave my opinion on the... Read more

I went to the March for Life every year as a teen. We were always told “Remember: you’re representing the Church.” We took a bus up from Columbus. Father France-Kelley, who had lived in Washington, DC, went on the bus with us. He gave us an tour of the area and said Mass in the beautiful Dominican House of Studies instead of taking us to Mass at the Basilica. I loved the Dominican House of Studies– that glorious little chapel... Read more

As I feel that I have said a thousand times on this blog, I am deeply opposed to abortion. The number of abortions I would like to see happen is zero. Zero is an acceptable number of abortions for me, despite what you might have heard. I am not opposed to abortion because I’m part of an ideologically pure subculture that takes that as its shibboleth. I am opposed to abortion because I think that life is valuable, and... Read more

I have two things to say for anyone attending the March For Life in Washington, DC tomorrow. First of all: God bless you for your witness. I haven’t been able to go to the March for Life in a few years. I used to go all the time. Let’s all keep working to save as many human lives as we can, womb to tomb. Secondly: please be careful to pick up your trash. Back when I used to go... Read more

I was recently mentioned in a curiously disjointed and rambling article at Church Militant. I don’t recommend  you look it up. In the article I was accused of being part of a left-wing cabal of alumnae of Franciscan University, even though I’ve stated multiple times that I dropped out of Franciscan’s MA program. The only degree I possess is my BA from Otterbein, a fine school in Westerville, Ohio.  I was also accused of being demure, which I trust... Read more

A couple days ago now, I talked about my upbringing among Apparition Chasers fascinated with every kind of alleged supernatural event– how it led to scrupulosity and fear of Mother Mary, among other things. Most of the people I know raised in such a culture are either still a part of it, or left the Church entirely. I don’t judge them for that. As for me, I am still here, still Catholic, but I don’t want anything to do... Read more

Yesterday I looked at how the government shutdown is hurting the nation’s most vulnerable. Now, we need to take a look at how it’s pinching the very richest– which, as you recall, is President Trump’s claim to fame and was lauded as his major qualification for president. He’s rich. It may have come to your attention that last night, the president served the Clemson Tigers a giant stack of cold fast food in a dinner buffet. There were photos of... Read more
