Because yesterday’s Mendelssohn reminded me so much of Russian sacred music (and because today is Our Lady’s Day), I find myself moving fairly straight-forwardly to the fifth of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 9 Sacred Pieces, the gorgeous “It Is Truly Meet.” It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and most pure, and the... Read more

Tomorrow, the Academy will be giving out their (in?)famous little golden statues. If past years are any indication, it will be both amusing (particularly to all as sardonically-inclined as I), and numbingly predictable. (I say “sardonic” because “mean-spirited” seems so…well…mean. And I say “predictable” because the awards are so…well…you know…) Now, I’m pretty lukewarm on the notion of the Academy as an Indicator of Actual Quality, so I’m not particularly troubled by past “slights.” Usually. But like any good cinophile, I’ve... Read more

Here’s another of the 8-part motets from Mendelssohn’s Opus 79 that I highlighted yesterday. This one, #6, is titled “On Good Friday” and (again!) includes the dreaded “Hallelujah” So it’s a bit of an odd selection. Like yesterday. Or at least it seems odd on the face of it. But musically/mood-ly, it’s perfect. Especially the final “Hallelujah,” which sounds a lot more uncertain than you might expect. Also, very Russian, to my ears. Not at all what I’m expecting from Mendelssohn.... Read more

As someone who has written of my affection for Hergé’s Tintin in the past, whose seven sons are quite possibly even greater fans of the artist (and his endearing little reporter) than I am, and who considers himself still very much a youngster at heart — “Emotionally, at least,” I say, hoping against hope that it’s more “childlike” than “childish” as my wife laughs to herself behind me, silently — I am happy to report that the first season of “The Adventures of... Read more

Today’s entry is the fourth of the six 8-part motets from Felix Mendelssohn’s Opus 79. Its title says “At Passiontide,” so it might not be quite right for Early Lent.  But it also says “Hallelujah!” So I’m getting it out of the way early on, before our ears become unaccustomed to the sound of that phrase. The piece itself is quite brief, and not something I would identify as Mendelssohnian. But the yearning is palpable, the “stumbling into the light” moment around the... Read more

Our long national, annual nightmare is over, at last. (OK, so maybe it’s just my long, annual, national nightmare. But either way, it’s over.) The rebuilt front office retooled the Dodgers roster over the winter and now it’s time for the players to take over, as pitchers and catchers reported Thursday for Spring Training at Camelback Ranch-Glendale. The first workout for batteries will be Friday. Position players are due to report next Wednesday, with the first full-squad workout next Thursday... Read more

In recent days, while reflecting on why music has always seemed to occupy such a large space in my life, I’ve come to realize that I use it in (mostly) two ways. Well, three, actually. Because the first — “first” as in “primary” — way is pretty much straight-up enjoyment, brought on by an appreciation of and a deep love for its beauty. But that’s a very emotional response, and I can’t/don’t analyze it much. I just feel it. In a more intellectual... Read more

The boys are gearing up for Lent with their usual enthusiasm. The Furious Five Eldest spent a lively breakfast hour engaged in “Give-Up One-Upmanship,” where each vies with the others in an attempt to come up with the most outlandish sacrifice. “I’m going to give up the iPad during the day!” Well, I’m going to give up all screens during the day, not just the iPad! And only watch one episode at night” “Hah! I’m going to give up watching anything... Read more

Two travelers undertake the construction of a gigantic bridge in order to cross a gulf blocking their way, inspiring with their courage and determination a rural community living nearby. I’m a sucker for these “painterly” CGI types of films because they’re such an encouraging bridge — Heh! — between the hand-drawn work I love so dearly and the computerized productions that are fast becoming (probably already are) the norm. There were a few moments that left a whiff of the “Uncanny Valley” in the air... Read more

Alexander Andrews: Do you love her? Peter Warne: A normal human being couldn’t live under the same roof with her without going nutty! She’s my idea of nothing! Alexander Andrews: I asked you a simple question! Do you love her? Peter Warne: YES! But don’t hold that against me, I’m a little screwy myself! Today’s Streaming Video Suggestion (SVS) is one that I’ve had in draft form for several months now in the desperate hope that it would eventually appear on a... Read more
