Sunday saw another artistic expression of the story on Calvary’s altar.  Caroline Armijo created a bag filled with rice . . . and a mint julep cup to illustrate Joseph’s emotional reunion with his brothers in Egypt. Read more

Today in worship we told the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors.  Joseph was the favored child, and he tormented his brothers by telling them all about dreams he’d had–dreams that he was lording it over them.  For our biblical characters, injustice met with violence and the family dysfunction continued . . . but we had another amazing art piece on our altar, created by Caroline Armijo.  Caroline described the project for the bulletin: “This week’s art,... Read more

With all these artsy people around me lately I’ve been feeling rather inspired.  Or, maybe it’s just that I am desperate to get some art up on the walls in our house as I think “we just moved in” is getting to be a lamer and lamer excuse for white walls the further we get from when we actually moved in (February . . . ). I saw a project like this on HGTV and, with the opinions of everyone... Read more

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but... Read more

The awesome art in worship continues.  This week Caroline Armijo and her husband, Henry created shadow puppets of Jacob and the angel wrestling at night.  The figures were displayed on the screen in front in a progression of poses; their shadow-y appearance helped tell the story of that mysterious nightime encounter. Read more

I knew it as the words were coming out of my mouth–too late to do anything about it.  My sermon went on too long today, just about a paragraph and a half too long, but too long nonetheless.  I’d already made the point I wanted to leave with the congregation, and then . . . I added something else, which had the unfortunate effect of taking away from the point.  Once the words are out, of course, you can’t take... Read more

Intersections . . . I think these are the rare moments when my life, briefly, seems to make sense. I noticed one today. I’ve been thinking a lot about weddings lately. There are a lot of them happening, imminently happening, probably happening, etc., around Calvary. This is wonderful for everybody, of course, and it gives me the opportunity to spend some time with couples preparing to marry, talking pretty intensely about the challenges and opportunities of making a commitment like... Read more

Last Sunday we began a 10-week sermon series on epic stories of the Hebrew text.  Our aim in worship is to tell the stories as many ways as we can so each of us might find some intersection between these great stories of faith and our own little stories.  Part of our plan for worship over the next few weeks is to use the awesome artistry of Caroline Armijo, who will tell the story each week with a visual display. ... Read more

I rarely get to read for fun.  This is a very sad thing, as I love nothing better than reading something really thought-provoking and wonderful . . . you know, something you hate to put down at night.  My very good friend and colleague Elizabeth Hagan lent me her beach read from this summer and I finally made time to start reading it.  It was already on my list . . . I mean, Christian Century reviewed it so I figure it technically... Read more

We’re trying something new at Calvary: a community blog site.  One staff member will post each week, and we’re hoping congregation members also add their stories and pictures.  This is my week to post.  Check out the story of my weekend retreat in New Orleans! Read more
