Good Wishes and Girl Crushes

Good Wishes and Girl Crushes 2017-03-17T21:38:05+00:00

I’m actually a few days late in offering congratulations, but I was under the weather.

Happy Blogoversary to Victoria, who confesses to having a “woman crush”.

This is the kind of post that you should not approach if, being male, you don’t have Kleenex and Kiehl’s hand lotion near you, or, if female, without memories of that time at spring break in Cancun.

Namely, it’s about a woman, a heterocurious woman (sadly), admitting she likes certain other women.

I frankly don’t mind admitting I share her admiration of Michelle Yeoh.

I don’t know that I’d call it a “crush,” but I also don’t think there is anything odd about a woman finding herself fascinated by another woman – or for that matter, a man admiring another man. I can think of several women whom I admire greatly, or who fascinate me, and it has nothing to do with sexual attraction, but more to do with wishing I possessed a particular quality or gracefulness or attribute.

It’s why some men like to watch Vin Diesel and John Wayne, or early Mel Gibson – they wish they were like them, that they looked like them, moved like them, etc.

Latifah

I admit to really liking Queen Latifah, a lot. I’ll always watch her in a film or on tv. Aside from her expressive singing voice and her credible acting, I think she is a beautiful woman to look at – gorgeous skin, gorgeous features and she has a serenity and groundedness to her that is – to me – utterly charismatic. She seems to be down-to-earth and completely at home in her skin. If I admire that in W, why wouldn’t I admire that in Latifah, as well?

My husband knows that if there is a movie showing on tv with Katharine or Audrey Hepburn, I will probably be watching, no matter how cruddy the picture, or how old the lady. And I’ll be loving everything they’re wearing!

Katharine

Audrey

He knows I probably won’t watch Elizabeth Taylor, though, except in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, when she was simply unspeakably beautiful. That white dress with the slope-shouldered portrait neckline. What a classic!

Maggie the Cat, perfect dress

Woman crushes? Nah. But I wouldn’t mind looking like any of ’em, not Latifah, not Kate nor Audrey, or even that particular era of Liz.

Apparently, Victoria feels the same way!

I’ll put up pictures of these gorgeous ladies, as soon as my pic server comes back up!
