Remember that bizarre incident in Chile where President Bush had to come to the aid of his own Secret Service guy?

I remember it. I remember seeing video of it, and watching Bush push people away from his guard and haul him in, then flick his cuffs, take his wife’s hand and greet a dignitary. Classy and cool. And you can watch the video, thanks to Marie. Thanks too, to RW and Dottie.

DJ Drummond has a long must-read of a post over at Wizbang in which he details actual attempts on the lives of both Presidents Clinton and GW Bush, and then examines fallout from various imaginary assassinations. This is not easy reading unless you are into political porn or you get gleeful over the idea of President Bush being killed – and sadly, those folks are out there

While I can understand why some can find it compelling to imagine “what if” scenarios, I can’t imagine why anyone would find it chuckle-worthy and it is a fair question to ask: would these folks so amused by the idea of a Bush-Snuff-Film be equally flippant or entertained by a film showing Bill Clinton assassinated? Or Hillary? Or Ned? I think not. Although I will stipulate that were such odious films to be made there are some on the right who would disgrace themselves by enjoying it, the bottom line is rational, sane people should not find this topic amusing, no matter who the president. As AJ Strata rightly observed yesterday, Americans may have their doubts about things, but we do not want another assassinated President. Won’t stand for it, actually.

Getting back to DJ Drummond’s piece, it is a difficult read…he lays out ideas that are repugnant and then looks at consequences and – thankfully, but it feels like too little too late, sometimes – he explains why that scenario “won’t happen.”

He concludes: ...if Liberals want to be smart, thy ought to denounce that film for the schlock it is, and support Bush the man, even though they cannot support his cause. They need him more than they know.

I’ve been really busy and haven’t had a chance to look around – can anyone tell me if any Democrat politicians or bloggers have been at all critical of this film? And papers or journalists? You’d think that – at the very least – former presidents or presidential aids, or former first ladies might have something to say about it.

It’s the least enjoyable piece of reading you’ll see this month. But…you should probably read it.

UPDATE: Also read Jules Crittendon’s column on the film, D.E.O.P (Death of a President) which he calls “revolting.” He writes: BBC’s Channel Four and BBC Director Gabriel Range are producing a “shockingly real,” “documentary-style” film that shows Bush being assassined by a Syrian at a large anti-war demonstration in Chicago. The film is clearly highly fanciful, as anti-war demonstrations have had a hard time mustering more than a few hundred angry marchers at a time ever since their efforts to keep Saddam Hussein in power failed.

Here’s what Range told the Times of London: “The film is based on meticulous research and interviews with FBI agents and people on the other side of the war on terror.”OK, we know that FBI agents have sometimes been on the other side of the war on crime, particularly in Boston. But the other side of the war on terror, if I’m not wrong, would be Al Qaeda.

Powerline is also commenting on this film and suggesting that Bush is our last defense against fascism:

In many social circles, people not only dare to launch vicious attacks on the President, they risk ostracism if they fail to do so. It’s not quite the repressive atmosphere that liberals were expecting. Are liberals setting up overseas bank accounts so they are ready to flee when the crackdown comes? Um, no. Indeed, liberals appear serenely confident that no adverse consequences will follow from their accusing the President of every crime known to humanity. They go happily about their business, secure in the knowledge that their hysterical attacks on the President are bullshit. [Emphasis mine – admin]

To date, President Bush has failed even to accuse his critics of a lack of patriotism, let alone imprison or behead them. This is not what has traditionally been characterized as fascism.

Nice to see someone just saying it.
