That’s adolescent reasoning, and of course, dishonest, but it’s also the reasoning meant to buttress up the case for gay marriage, except instead of “Mom”, the non-prohibitor is Christ Jesus, and I’m writing about it at First Things: …we are told by Jimmy Carter, Stephen Colbert, Bill O’Reilly and others that if you look in the Bible, “Jesus never said anything about homosexuality or gay marriage.” Of course, in chapter 10 of Mark’s Gospel Jesus states definitively that divorce cannot... Read more

There is a saying in the news industry: “if it bleeds, it leads…” But not always. Perhaps the saying should be changed to, “if it bleeds and is politically expedient it leads, otherwise, it gets buried. For instance, you might remember the story of Kermit Gosnell, the Pennsylvania abortionist who was charged with killing at least one women and multiple (perhaps hundreds) of late-term babies in his “practice. Gosnell performed late-term abortions, marveling once that a baby was “so big,... Read more

In order to improve site function, load times and stability, Patheos is going to be moving all of its blogs comments sections into Disqus. For a couple of days you may see older comments disappear while newer ones remain, or vice versa. It does not mean that suddenly all of our bloggers have decided “no comments for you!” It just means we’re doing this, and with over 250 blogs to service, comments sections will be weird for a few days.... Read more

He has been writing an important series on culture, class and the decline of marriage on his blog, but Ross Douthat’s latest column in the New York Times is getting a lot of attention, as it is a rather thoughtful look at the propensity of Ivy-League alums to seek out Ivy-League mates, and how it affects the nation: Of course Ivy League schools double as dating services. Of course members of elites — yes, gender egalitarians, the males as well... Read more

Attempting, yesterday, to make a Vegan snack/dessert sort of thing, I found some carrot cake mix in my pantry, and a 15 ounce can of pumpkin puree. I love pumpkin, and thought mixing the two would be a nice idea — add some pumpkin pie spice, some cinnamon (maybe some walnuts) — it would omit the need for eggs or oils, which always confuse me. Did you know Canola oil is a Canadian blend? Anyway, the box mix and the... Read more

We’ve been running (and continually adding to) ruminations, here on the portal, as to why we are Catholic. It’s actually part of a larger project throughout the Patheos site, involving bloggers from every channel, and it’s pretty interesting. Later this week, we will hopefully find all of the Catholic responses gathered together and showcased on our landing page. One of our readers liked Fr. Dwight Longenecker’s response so well, he created a rather moving and effective video out of it.... Read more

I admit, I don’t watch much television or follow celeb-gossip things, so it’s quite possible that I am very ill-informed and Piers Morgan is a major intellectual powerhouse who has slipped by my radar because, well, I don’t know who the major intellectual powerhouses are; they never seem to be the ones winning the prizes anymore. I see by this Wikipedia entry that in the UK Morgan, among other things, wrote, edited, judged talent contests and is currently the editorial... Read more

I was surprised to read here that Pope Francis is the first pontiff to tour the “scavi” — the “Tomb of Saint Peter and the Necropolis under the Vatican Basilica”. My husband and I were lucky enough to tour those narrow, very humid streets beneath St. Peter’s (only unearthed in the 20th century) in 2010, and although I am rather claustrophobic, the place was too fascinating, and the privilege of being there too humbling to give in to it. To... Read more

Two great reads for you as I head out to Adoration: 1) Sister Mary Ann Walsh hits a homerun as she observes the media going batshit crazy over basic Church teaching as though it’s all brand-new: It amazes me when basic church teaching is received as if it were somethig brand new. This morning’s New York Times brought the latest example with the headline: “Dolan Says the Catholic Church Should Be More Welcoming to Gay People.” A glance at other... Read more

Happy Easter. Christ is risen, and all things are made new! It’s a time to break the chains of old habits, old thoughts; time to unwind and finally toss old tapes; he is risen: “I am doing something new…” On Wednesday, traipsing through my archives, I came upon this post from last year — the image of a full-term baby tossed into the trash, and my thoughts about it. Upon re-reading it, I thought about how easily we throw people... Read more
