Utah has just been too darn liberal in its marriage policies. At least that’s the theory of Rep. LaVar Christensen (R…of course) who introduced this extremely urgent legislation:
…that would reiterate the state’s policy that marriage is between a man and a woman and require that publicly funded programs, laws and regulations that are designed to support families be “carefully scrutinized to ensure that they promote the family.”
The bill states that a married father and mother and their children are the “fundamental unit of society,” echoing language found in the LDS Church’s “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.”
The bill adds, “Marriage and family predate all governments and are supported by and consistent with the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God, the Creator and Supreme Judge of the World, affirmed in the nation’s founding Declaration of Independence.”
It’s always fascinating to me how these religious fanatics love to rummage around our founding documents to find the rare mentions of God. Inevitably they end up with the Declaration, never mind that it was written by a deist who denied the divinity of Jesus and held religion in general in the lowest regard.
Once again we see that the ONLY opposition to equality for LGBQT Americans comes from the American Taliban. In this case, it’s the Mormon wing (which is only one “m” away from having the perfect name).
