Technology and Me

Technology and Me June 27, 2011

I have for most of my life been what is called an “early adapter” to technological innovations.  Having learned to type on an old manual typewriter, and having written too many term papers on it–along with the challenge of making corrections (I have always been a speedy but mistake-prone typist), a computer with its ease of corrections seemed to me to be the most amazing of inventions.

And then there is the Internet, with its ease of acquiring information and ability to shop online.  What  release from long lines and stores just too full of stuff for someone like me who doesn’t particularly enjoy shopping!

What seemed most wonderful recently was my ability to renew my driver’s license online.  Mine expired yesterday and I didn’t think about it until Friday.  If I received a renewal notice, I never saw it.

I checked online, and discovered I qualified to take care of it that way, which I immediately did. As I was congratulating myself on my efficiency, it also dawned on me, “What kind of experience did I miss by NOT having to go to a DPS office and do this in person?”

My first impulse is to answer, “An awful one.”  But on further reflection, I am seriously wondering about this.

Perhaps it would have been a time to offer a kind blessing to an overworked clerk, or give my space in line to someone more hurried than I.

Perhaps I would have struck up a conversation with someone in line and discovered a mutual acquaintance that I had long lost touch with.

Perhaps the interruption of my day would have enhanced my prayer life and taught me more about patience and compassion.

Perhaps efficiency and technology are not always the way to go.

Just perhaps.

I pray on this day, “Lord God, I ask for wisdom as I go about my daily tasks.  Teach me the difference between efficiency and effectiveness, and give me discernment to know when I should take the long, hard road instead of the short cut.  And, no matter which road I choose, help me to be an agent of Your grace to those around me.  Amen.”
