When an “anyone but Donald” is married to an “anyone but Hillary,” part three

When an “anyone but Donald” is married to an “anyone but Hillary,” part three 2016-07-21T13:07:03-05:00

The “anybody but Donald” party here is working hard to keep all this in perspective and to learn from this. A friend of mine recently posted the video below of the massive Andromeda Galaxy. I spent a few minutes caught in the bigness of the universe, glorying in the everlasting movement of creation that takes place all around us.

I also acknowledged that chaos and uncertainty always accompany the creative process. I’ve been reading a lot of history recently. I am struck again with the impermanence of any nation, any state, any institution. Everything constantly changes, struggles, dies, is reborn in new forms.

The US political system will never be the same after this election. It will see much death, much rebirth.

Those who read my columns regularly also know I see giant parallels in the large US political system and in the much smaller United Methodist Church political system. We’ll all scarily divided, seeing things so differently from one another, barely holding together.

In a moment of reflection on our own tininess in the vastness of space, I say, “So what?”

Yes, all will change. Some will be welcome to me. Some will not–but might be welcome to others. I am not the center of the universe.

As for my spouse and I–well, we quickly got past the tense moment and resumed the joy of our joint life. It’s time for me to view this more as a crazy spectacle–until the next time my ire rises over something my “anyone but Hillary” spouse says.
