While many of the spells in this book are more open-ended for any kind of protection you are seeking, this one is meant to be used solely for your home. When you see clichéd representations of witches, you often see them creating a circle of salt. Salt is definitely one of the top tools to use for protection. It can be added to almost any spell, used in casting your circle or, in this case, to safeguard your home. Use this when moving into a new home, when you feel unsafe or when you simply want to keep out people with negative energies. Using charcoal or ashes along with salt in many folk traditions is considered “black salt” or “witches salt.” This is my own version of the traditional recipe.
Ingredients & Materials Needed
Large bowl
4 cups (1.1 kg) salt
1⁄2 cup (16 g) dried sage (common, white, black, sagebrush)
1⁄2 cup (18 g) dried lavender
1⁄2 cup (16 g) dried angelica
1⁄2 cup (16 g) dried peppermint
1 tbsp (6 g) black pepper
3 tbsp (18 g) activated charcoal (or ash from a spell or fire)
Optional: 8 drops lavender and/or 8 drops sage essential oil

The Ritual
In your bowl, add your salt. You can use table salt, sea salt, Himalayan salt or anything you have. When you are using salt for protection, it’s not as important to use a specific kind.
Take each herb in your hand and charge it. You can cup it in your hand or place your hands over it, however you choose. You can also say something aloud, whatever feels comfortable and natural to you. Crumble each herb in your hand, into the bowl. The more your work the herbs in your hands, the more energy you are infusing into it.
Grind the black pepper into the bowl. Add in the charcoal. You can mix the salt with your hands or with a spoon. If you want to add a little zing, add one or both of the essential oils.
Place your salt in a jar until you are ready to use it. For this ritual you will be using it around your home, so if you want to use it right away you definitely can.
When you want to use the salt, go outside your home and begin to create a border around the entire property. Make a line with your salt all the way around, creating a whole circle. If you live in an apartment, you can do this around the front door and your balcony. You can also add a small amount to each corner of your home. As you lay down the salt, imagine a protective bubble encasing your entire home. No one who wants to cause you harm can enter. You are protected.
