What About Me?

We cannot escape the influence of family and culture. It surrounds us, screams at us, begs us to conform.

But, in the end, there is just one definitive factor that solidifies our perspective.

Choice.

Everything around us is a guide, a helper, or a hindrance. It all exists to influence the choices we make. In the end, however, we cannot escape or avoid making the choice of our perspective for ourselves.

We have decided to accept the affirmations of our influences or to pave our own way. In truth, we have generally chosen some middle way. We make our choices so quickly and so constantly that we are scarcely aware we are making a choice at all. Our perspective ‘just comes to us’. It is an item of clothing we drape over ourselves everyday, almost completely unaware that, if we so choose, we could wear something else.

It takes courage to take responsibility for our choices. It is much more convenient to blame, to be enslaved in subconscious repetition. As we stumble through life, it is easier to let the influences wash over us than to own the fact that we are influencers, first over our own perspective and then in the lives of others.
