Magick can be a dangerous business sometimes. Despite one’s best intentions, power, jealousy, and hatred can often create difficult problems that need strong solutions. I am a native New Yorker, and my city can be a dangerous place too. As I rode home on the subway last night I glanced over to see what the woman next to me was reading. Well I didn’t really have any choice, she was a bit larger than the seat allowed for and there wasn’t anywhere else to look. On her phone she had pulled up a very artful text about how to deal with spiritual warfare. Interesting topic I thought, but from what I could see over her shoulder the advice was pretty much centered around Jesus and casting out demons. The advice in her book would probably work. Many Hoodoo spells use the reciting of Psalms and other biblical passages to bring about necessary change. However, as my Voodoo priest likes to say Jesus is a busy man. Think about it, each day millions pray to him to work miracles, and while many are answered some people are still left shaking their head as to the evil and injustice that still exists n the world. Reading the Spiritual Warfare through Jesus pamphlet over this woman’s shoulder I kind of felt the same way I did when someone told me this week they were suffering from a psychic warfare problem. This person had received a reading that said they should skewer a rat on a stick and leave it as an offering in the woods, magickally you would probably be successful if you did these things, but there has to be more than one way to skin a rat.

Certainly everyone needs a few good ‘Defense Against the Dark Arts’ spells, as they say in Harry Potter. Here on the Voodoo Universe Blog there have been many posts that would be helpful for protection in this way, if you haven’t seen them already please check out:

The following spell is helpful whenever you feel through divination or intuition that you are under spiritual attack. It is best performed on the new moon, but can also be done whenever you feel it is necessary.

Spiritual Warfare Spell

White Seven Day Candle

Black Seven Day Candle

4 drops Sage oil

2 pinches Grains of Paradise

4 drops Frankincense oil

1/2 cup Holy Water

1/2 cup Florida Water

Place the candles in the center of your working altar or space. Combine the oils, grains of paradise and waters in a large bowl. Wash down the outside of the candles, then use the rest of the mixture to wash your threshold and windowsills. Any remaining water should be dumped out on the earth. Light the candles as you concentrate on yourself getting stronger and your enemies shrinking and failing. Let the candles burn down as much as possible, extinguish them if you have to leave, and light them again when you return. Repeat as often as necessary.
