Guess who’s back? Pop Occulture is back again and even better with Burlesque ! Well at least the first episode back is about burlesque, specifically the Occult History of Burlesque. Many long time followers may remember when we started the YouTube show back in October of 2020. There “we explored the crossroads of occultism, popular culture and media. Jason Winslade, PhD, media studies, religion and performance studies scholar and Lilith Dorsey, MA.,  author, filmmaker, cinema scholar, and voodoo priestess have been giving workshops and classes on these topics for years. However these plague times being what they are, we decided to take the show online. During each 30 minute program we discuss themes and issues surrounding the occult in various popular media. We call it Pop Occulture, which is a fun way of saying the popular culture of the occult. Pop Occulture thrives at the crossroads of popular culture and the occult. In the show, your hosts will discuss and delve into themes, issues and manifestations of the occult in popular media and culture. Join as we investigate the tropes, tragedies and transformations of the mysterious, weird and occult world.”

Chiefly we are still true to this mission, but we’ve decided to change it up a little. No surprise here we are going to getting weirder and more obscure. Some of you probably knew it was coming anyway. The focus is shifting from classics like The Wizard of Oz and headed straight for the unusual. We have got lots of great shows on the way. Tune in to the premiere happening soon September 27th 2023.

Leila Wadell, 1910.

This time the fascinating subject is Occult Dance and Burlesque and we are joined by Vivian Meretrix, Sorceress of Shimmy talking about Chicago’s Illumi-Naughtie Occult Burlesque. Tune in and  join us as we shake with the Shimmy Saints and talk about the history of Occult Dance and Burlesque, Aleister Crowley, Leila Waddell, Mata Hari, Dr. John and much more.

As always if you have liked what you find here please remember to like, comment, and share. !
