Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh go hand in hand with the holidays. They were said to have been the original gifts for the Christ Child, and they are still quite useful today … especially the Gold. Before Gold was a gift for a child, it was an offering worthy of the Goddess.

In the Roman pantheon Gold was the realm of the Goddess Fortuna. Emperors were said to keep gold statues of this goddess in their homes to bring them success and wealth. June 24- Midsummer was said to be Fortuna’s sacred day. Ritual Fires were burned and offerings were made. For modern day inspiration dailywicca.com features an interesting Fortuna candle spell with an invocation for luck and fortune.

The ancient Greeks venerated the golden goddess Theia. She possessed sacred sight and was known for her oracluar prowess, as well as her gift of bestowing gold on her patrons. Her otherworldly sight was said to be part of the power of the sun, use the following money spell to bring the gift of financial sunshine into your life.

Theia Sunshine Gold Candle

Ingredients:

1 Yellow or Gold Seven day pullout candle

Gold glitter

Gold leaf (if possible or shredded dollar bill)

Small piece of pyrite

Gold and Silver Oil ( use recipe below )

3 drops Heliotrope oil

Carve a sun, or other sacred symbol for money and attraction on your candle. This can be as simple as a dollar sign or as complicated as you would like to make it. Anoint with oil then rub with glitter and gold leaf. Place pyrite and a small amount of river water in the bottom of the glass. Place the candle inside the glass. Make the sign of the crossroads in the air with the candle then light on the full moon. For safety sake please never leave a burning candle unattended.

The La Regla Lucumi tradition, also known as Santeria, the Orisha Oshun is the energy, the embodiment of gold. She is the queen of it’s glittery goodness and it falls sweetly from her divine hips. Some believe her to be much more than a Goddess… she is a ruling force of the Universe. Either of the following spells can be used to connect with her and improve your chances of drawing wealth and success.

Silver and Gold Oil Recipe

Silver and gold are universal currencies. In Santeria, also more properly known as La Regla Lucumi, there is a popular formula to increase wealth called Oro y Plata. It includes both Old and New World ingredients to maximize your financial health. This Silver and Gold Oil recipe can be used to anoint candles, added to a bath, or worn to bring about financial success. Use the oil to anoint your hands and feet before going out to shop, anoint your wallet, a blank check made out to yourself and/or rub on prosperity candles and burn for added effectiveness.

Ingredients:

Gold and Silver glitter

6 drops Orange oil

6 drops Cinnamon oil

1 drop Clove oil

Sweet almond oil for base

Combine all ingredients in a small bottle and shake to combine while you focus you thoughts on bringing success into your life.

Oshun Bath

Pinch of Cinnamon

Pinch of Nutmeg

1 ounce Rose Water

1 ounce Florida Water

1 ounce River Water

Combine all ingredients together and mix well. Add to bath designed to honor this Orisha of love, money and gold.

Trash Voodoo Art on Ouidah Beach photo by Willem Heerbaart. Photo cropped and text added. Licensed by CC 2.0

This is the continuation of my previous post about Voodoo Spells. Desperate people can be willing to sell their souls and empty their wallets for the mystical, magical Voodoo spell. It doesn’t have to be like that though. There are some basic Voodoo truths you need to know first, and I’m going to lay it all out for you.

6. Promises, Promises

Please keep your promises and ritual obligations. This goes without saying, but Voodoo and Vodou spirits are notorious for holding you accountable. On many occasions I have seen people forget to literally ” pay their dues” and the consequences are never pretty. If you are blessed enough to succeed in your magickal efforts, please be sure to give credit, and keep your Voodoo promises.

7. Chances are you need a psychic reading first, before you start ordering up voodoo spells.

This is like a spiritual diagnostic. Everyone, and I mean everyone should have divination readings done on a regular basis. One of my favorite “Spells Gone Bad” stories is about a woman who called me over two decades ago, when I was running Brawnen’s Pantry, my mail order and later online spiritual supply shop. It doesn’t exist anymore, but that’s another story. This woman had called me insanely obsessed with the desire to win the lottery. She had an overdue utility bill and had convinced herself that the only way it was going to be paid was if she “ hit the numbers.” I tried to persuade her to get a reading first, but she just wanted the spell. In the end she did win the lottery, in the amount of about $500, more than enough to cover the bill. The next day however, her husband had a heart attack and died. Now, I have never believed that the two events were related.

Voodoo doesn’t work like that.

I do however believe she had much bigger issues she should have been worrying about than lottery winning or an overdue gas bill. I’m also not saying his death could necessarily have been prevented. She could have at least maybe enjoyed the last few days she had with him, instead of worrying about something that seems unimportant now. A reading will always help you find out where to concentrate your attention.

8. Respect your practitioner and hopefully they will respect you back.

Don’t argue with them please. If you don’t agree with their rules and needs, find someone else. I have already stressed the importance of finding godparents in Voodoo or Haitian Vodou, but sometimes this is not possible. There are however, a lot of practitioners out there. Get recommendations and find one that’s a good fit.

9. Everything works better if you share the wealth.

Voodoo Sign photo by Dan Merino. Licensed under CC 2.0

I know psychic readers that have their medical bills paid by their more successful clients. One of my own godmothers even received an entire house as part of a bequest from a client. Unfortunately, I also know many individuals who received large sums of money, jobs, or healings from Voodoo or other spiritual practitioners who then turned on them, refused to pay it forward, or help the community. Please people, this is not ok.

It’s understandable that people might want or need Voodoo spells from time to time, but remember to use your head and consider these simple truths. Do you have wild spellcrafting stories? I’d love a good laugh, please share them below.

Voodoo spells are hot sh*t. Everyone wants to sell you an expensive little bottle of love, money, magick. It’s a monstrous business, and even though I am an initiated Voodoo Priestess, I’m not really sure why. Most of the time the stories I hear are about hucksters and haters and people would probably be better off just throwing their money away. There are a few truths that I think might help people better understand what is and what isn’t possible with a Voodoo spell. Good luck, and if you’re going to go to a new practitioner for a Voodoo spell please do so with your eyes and your mind open. As they used to say on the cop show Hill Street Blues, “Let’s be careful out there.”

1.Be Careful What You Wish For.

Love-candle photo by Bogdan. Licensed under CC 2.0

This might as well be the cardinal rule of Magick. This tired trope gets repeated so damn often because it’s true. My favorite cautionary tale about this I call the “Got to Have Pat” story. I’ve been telling it for over a decade. It never gets old. The story was told to me by a dear friend who actually got mixed up in trying to help these people. Note: the following names have been changed to protect the ignorant. Hoodoo Joe (let’s call him) was in love, not a casual love, an all consuming passion that drove his every thought. He had been involved with a man named Pat. Pat was a rogue, a bad boy, a Lothario, in short, he couldn’t keep it in his pants. Hoodoo Joe spent many nights waiting, worrying, and weeping for a situation that never came. Early on in the game of love, he started to turn to Hoodoo practitioners and root workers for help. He performed one unsuccessful spell after another, until he had amassed an entire room in his home dedicated to altars and spellwork designed to bring about the results he wanted. Finally, he was successful. Pat moved in and they were both dead of AIDS within the year. Now, I don’t think Voodoo spells caused Hoodoo Joe’s demise, but maybe he should have opened his mind up to different possibilities.

2.You get what you pay for, and put into it.

This doesn’t mean you have to pay thousands of dollars to get what you want, but your success will be built on the time, money and effort you put into it. Very often when people contact me for spellwork they have no interest or desire in doing what it takes to make the process successful. Money as I have said is one component, you don’t expect your doctor or your lawyer to work for free do you? Spells also become more effective when directly connected ingredients are used. For example if you are working to heal someone, it’s best to have them there, if they can’t be there then try to use some of their hair or handwriting as a link to their physical self. My experience is that people can be just plain lazy, and they don’t want to bother to get or perform the necessary elements for success.

3. Voodoo Doctors Specialize.

Baron Samedi- Voodoo Man photo by Uberto. Licensed under CC 2.0

Medical doctors specialize and Voodoo doctors ( another name for practitioners) also specialize. Be a little wary of going to someone who says they can do everything well. Many spellcrafters, myself included, work in partnership with other practitioners to make sure they can carry spells for all situations, even if they didn’t create all the magic themselves. You wouldn’t go to a foot doctor for a headache, so don’t put your foot in your behind and think one guru can solve all your problems.

4. More, More, More…How Do you Like it?

Voodoo practice follows a general rule of increase. By that I mean the situation you are working on can, in effect,

build up a tolerance for whatever spiritual solutions you are throwing at it. One day a situation might be helped by a single candle, the next time you may need two, after that four, … I knew one man who was up to 24 candles to solve his problem before he decided to change things up.

5. It Ain’t Easy.

Voodoo objects, Voodoo Museum, New Orleans, USA photo by Paul Mannix. Licensed under CC 2.0

I got a question the other day from a woman who wanted a love spell to return her lost love. Now this situation has it’s own issues, see number 1 above, but the other problem is that she was located in Indonesia. As much as I would love to have mastered the magick or the logic of the Customs department, many of the ritual items we use in New Orleans Voodoo and Haitian Vodou spells are not easily transported or are forbidden across international lines. Most spells have herbal ingredients, and sometimes animal ones too, you can see the potential problems.

This is obviously just a beginning, only five of nine. Tune in Next Time on Voodoo Universe as the list goes on with more truth about Voodoo Spells.

Love-candle photo by Bogdan.

On my last trip to Jamaica after a heartfelt conversation with a Rastaman I found sleeping on the beach at sunrise, I finally asked him what he thought the key to Caribbean culture and spirit was? He responded simply “Love and pain.”

I think those words are very wise. In a way I think that is what the soul of voodoo is about too. That’s some big stuff, Love and Pain. I’ve done psychic readings professionally for over 20 years now, and I used to answer the phone to my customers “Love or money?” I stopped phrasing things that way, it was love most of the time anyway, because that’s what makes the world go ’round according to my vintage music box. And for better or worse Love can help the pain go away.

My advice to those seeking love help with a spell is a simple few things: Be careful what you wish for; Be open and

available; Think outside the box ( that may be a pun.) Your self and your environment should be physically and spiritually clean before you begin creating. Light white candles, black candles, sprinkle sea salt and use whatever methods you usually do for cleansing.

Tarot and Oracle Decks photo by Lilith Dorsey. All rights reserved.

The end of the year is an auspicious time for psychics readings and divination of all kinds. As always there are a multitude of new tarot and oracle decks on the market and this is a great time to check them out. Some people believe you only need one tarot deck, madness I say. Different decks provide a different outlook on a situation. A reader may choose to use one deck for personal readings, and another for readings done for others. Alternatively they may change decks based on the season, or the situation. Ultimately it’s up to you. Here are some recent best and brightest decks for you to consider getting for yourself, or as a gift for that special someone. Just let me start by saying that these are in no particular order, I honestly recommend each and every one of them.

The Green Witch’s Oracle Deck by Arin Murphy-Hiscock and Sara Richard. Photo by Lilith Dorsey. All rights reserved.

The Green Witch’s Oracle Deck by Arin Murphy-Hiscock – This deck is for Earth Witches, Garden Witches, and everyone in-between. The art on these cards is phenomenal, depicting the delightful bounty of nature. There are cards for celestial beings like the moon, and cards for very specific instances of the earth’s bounty- like the cards for Thyme or Broom. What I especially appreciate is that the book in addition to giving you a clear meaning for each card also gives a reflection. A few year’s ago we also reviewed this author’s book Protection Spells. If you like this deck from Adams Media maybe check that out too.

Turning Terrestrial Tides Tarot by Sara Calvarese – There are many different traditional tarot decks out there. I’m glad to say this isn’t one of them. Basic variations on a classic theme can get tiresome. However,  the images featured here are new and innovative. This deck is all about shifting the world around you to maximize the best outcomes. This deck is published by PM Press, a powerful company releasing some great titles.

Santa Muerte Tarot Mini Cards – The popularity of Santa Muerte continues to grow exponentially. This mini deck makes it easy to take this “bony lady” everywhere you go. Each card, including the lesser arcana, is colorfully presented and tells it’s own unique story.

Lilith Dorsey and Charles Harrington at Endless Night Vampire Ball – New Orleans.

Tarot of the Vampires by Charles Harrington and Craig Maher – Vampires love tarot too, and this deck features all the delightful darkness you would expect. The exquisitely illustrated deck and book do their best to remind us that “(Un)life can be so sweet…,” and how sweet it is. Each card shows us a different aspect of the unholy creatures of the night. I had the most fortunate pleasure to meet the author Charles Harrington at this year’s Endless Night Vampire Ball here in New Orleans. I’m also proud to announce that an image from this deck graces the cover of my soon to be released Tarot Every Witch Way.

The Queen Mab Oracle– This anxiously awaited oracle was released by Llewellyn Publications earlier this year. I’m a huge fan of Tess Whitehurst’s work and when I heard this was coming out I couldn’t wait to see it. The cover image for this deck, depicted above, is the card named Proud and Pitiless, it urges the seeker to speak their truth and stand up for themselves. This like so many other messages in this deck are powerful and profound. Another plus is that this deck features a wide range of multi-cultural images, making this more inclusive than several of the decks on the market today. I can’t recommend it enough.

Witch Sister Tarot by Julia Jeffrey – At first glance this deck just looks intense. Published by Llewellyn Books, it has been described as “hauntingly beautiful,” and it is indeed that and so much more. Several of the cards feature animals, familiars if you like taking the form of both birds and beasts.

The Beloved Dead: An Oracle for Divining Ancestral Wisdom– I truly appreciate a deck that features photos or photo collages. This deck does just that with powerful images of those long past, of the “beloved dead” who we both long for and look to for guidance. The creators of this work, Carrie Paris and Tina Hardt, do a fantastic job with this oracle designed to help people access knowledge which may have been lost. Published by Weiser Books this makes an important addition to the library of anyone serious about ancestor working.

Hopefully you will find inspiration and answers in these cards. In the past this blog has featured posts about Crappy Yule Gifts, so if you’re looking for those click here. Have a great holidaze season and as always if you have enjoyed what you find here please remember to like, comment, and share !

Bay Leaf photo. Licensed under CC 0.0

Bay leaf is one of those marvelously magical ingredients that can be found in almost every kitchen cabinet. Bay can be used for protection, cleansing, money, healing, success, financial gain, and anxiety relief. Hoodoo is a series of practices based on what works. This herb works in a whole variety of situations, I hope you try it out.

Bay is a Mediterranean plant, but it can be grown indoors in colder climates. The botanical name of this plant is Laurus nobilis and it has been cultivated as both a culinary and magical herb for many centuries. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends that gardeners “Choose a warm, sheltered planting site, protected from strong winds and in full sun or light shade. Bay needs free-draining soil that doesn’t get waterlogged.” In cold climates it is frequently placed in pots and grown outdoors during the summer, and then brought inside as a houseplant before chance of frost.

This plant is quite literally the stuff of legend, Greek legend to be specific. It is said to have been named after the river nymph Daphne. Daphne is said to have been turned into the tree in order to shield her from the unwanted advances of the God Apollo. More detail about this can be found on the site hellenicgods.org .

One of the beautiful things about bay is that you can add it to your magick in many different ways. You can burn it. You can add it to your food. Your spells and magicks will be customized for your intent. The plant is thought to be associated with fire and ruled by the sun. Consequently it is said to be especially useful for those with strong Leo placements. This plants fiery energy is probably the reason it gets added to so many ritual burns and bonfires. However Kitchen Witches know that bay leaves floating in soups and stews are how most of us were introduced to this magickal treasure. The following spell working uses both fire and water to bring success when needed.

Bay Success Spell Working – Success spells are the go to workings in my spiritual arsenal.

Ingredients:

3 Bay Leaves

1 cup rain water

3 new coins (with the current year’s date)

1 small white votive candle

glass bowl

Instructions: Gather all your ingredients together on your ritual altar or shrine. If you don’t have an altar or shrine, you can simply place them on a table where they will be undisturbed for the time of the working. Place the bowl in the center of the space. Add the rain water, bay leaves and coins. Place the white votive in the center of the bowl and light it. Repeat the following three times, “vision and action come to me, grant me all the success that will be.” Remember to never leave a burning candle unattended. As the candle burns down, think about all the ways success can and will come to you. Pay attention to any unusual thoughts you may have. Bay is a prophetic herb and may be guiding you towards some interesting and new avenues for success. When the candle has burned down take the items out of the water. Dump the water at a crossroads. Take the coins and place them in your purse or wallet. Bury the bay leaves as close to your front door as possible, if you do not have open ground there consider placing them in a flower pot. The used wax from the candle can be placed in the trash.

Magnolia blooms photo by Lilith Dorsey. All rights reserved.

Magnolia blooms are so sweet and delightful it is obvious they are associated with love. Luckily for us, almost all parts of the plant are used. In your magickal spells and formulas most often the blooms and the oil is probably the most popular part of the plant. But the seed pods, roots and leaves are also quite powerful.

Magnolia Seed Pods

Like any seed pods, the ones from a magnolia tree can be used for growth and new beginnings. Try making a gris gris bag, or herbal magickal charm, that contains lavender petals, magnolia seed, and sesame seed. Craft it on the eve of the full moon and hang this over your front door. This is designed to bring luck and success into your home.

Using Leaves and Flowers

I always appreciate when all parts of a plant can be used in my magicks. The leaves of this plant, either powdered or used whole, and places in one’s shoes is said to lead to good luck and financial success. An oil made from the leaves when worn to bed is said to attract a night of passion and love.

Growing Magnolia Trees

As trees go Magnolia is a pretty easy one to cultivate. It can grow in sun or partial shade, and moist soil. Well established plants can also tolerate some drought. With changing weather conditions, I think this makes it an ideal plant to consider adding to your garden if you can. Typically found in zones 5-9 they are adaptable to many climates. Many varieties are native to Louisiana and my hometown of New Orleans, and on warm nights their intoxicating scent can be found wafting through the breeze.

Magickal Uses For Magnolia

  • love and romance
  • luck
  • happiness
  • attraction
  • relationships
  • fidelity
  • wisdom
  • self-confidence

How do you use magnolia in your practice? I would love to hear about it in the comments section. If you would like to learn more about plants, herbs, and flowers associated with Hoodoo, please check out the other Hoodoo How We Do posts in this series.
