I got a message on my Facebook page from a casting director who is working on a show about religious conversion. I’m sure they won’t have much trouble finding people to talk about joining Judaism, or Christianity, or Islam, but it might be more challenging to find people who can talk about becoming Hindu. I really want us to be represented! So if you are new to Hinduism or fairly new and between ages 16 and 24, I hope you’ll... Read more

We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. This is the fourth post on The Bhagavad Gita. From the Winthrop Sargeant translation of The Gita… 19. The noise burst asunder The hearts of the sons of Dhritarashtra, And the tumult caused The sky and the earth to resound. 20. Then, Arjuna, having seen the sons of Dhritarashtra Drawn up in battle array, Raised his bow as the clash of weapons began. 21. Arjuna... Read more

You may be surprised to hear that I actually like bumper stickers. I enjoy the pithy ones, reading funny things in traffic. And I have bumper stickers on my own car mainly as a reaction to seeing one too many Christian bumper stickers. It felt like other voices needed to express themselves too. The other day some friends and I were making up Hindu versions of common Christian bumper stickers. Here’s the ones we came up and I’d love to... Read more

The second book in our book club series is Eat, Pray Love. Is it a Hindu book? Not exactly, but it is very relevant to the experiences of non-Indian Hindus. The author has a Hindu guru (whose identity has been rather easily found out by those familiar with the world of Indian gurus). Julia Roberts after playing the author in the movie, claimed to have become a Hindu. So I think it will be worthwhile to examine the experiences and... Read more

I used to trust the police. I grew up believing in authority figures. Police exist to protect us, to keep us safe. If I’m lost, they will help me. If I’m afraid, they will help me. Every day it becomes more clear that I was able to feel that way because I have light skin. Every day more innocent people are being murdered by those who are supposed to protect them and I feel so horribly helpless against it. When... Read more

Many of the people that I chat with on Twitter feel that people who express pride in Hinduism are being branded as Fundamentalist, “Right” wing, Hindutva, and Fantatic. I think I can kind of see both sides on this one. I understand the fears of the people who are doing that labeling. Sometimes being vocally proud of your religion/beliefs/practices can be a code for wanting yours to be number one and to oppress people with different beliefs. I’ve seen that... Read more

My mother went through a very difficult experience recently when her wallet was stolen. She may have left it somewhere or dropped it but the person who found it did not attempt to return it as I think any of us would! Instead he took her cash and used her credit cards. She suspects it was a man who took it because suddenly she had charges for car parts and BBQ accessories. An assumption, but a plausible one. She wondered... Read more

We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. This is the fourth post on The Bhagavad Gita. From the Winthrop Sargeant translation of The Gita… 12. Making him (Duryodhana) happy, The aged Kuru, his grandsire, Roaring like a lion, Blew his conch horn powerfully. 13. And thereupon the conch horns and the kettledrums, The cymbals, drums, and trumpets All at once were sounded. The uproar was tremendous. 14. Then, standing in the great... Read more

My parents were visiting us this past week for Thanksgiving. We had a great time working on the house and eating traditional Thanksgiving food like pumpkin pie, green beans, bread stuffing, and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately I also got sick just as family arrived! I tend to pick up anything that’s going around and now that my husband is an elementary school teacher it’s even worse! So I had a fever for part of their visit and we took it easy... Read more
