Dear St. Joseph: It’s your feast day in the Church today, and even if you don’t want to be bothered, because you’re a real worker bee, lots of folks are going to extol your virtues ad nauseum today. None of us are sure what those are though, so you’ve kind of become the “fill in the blank” saint for all that is true, good, and solid, if not quite beautiful. (more…) Read more

I love reading about the lives of the saints. Especially from the old books like those found on the YIMCatholic Bookshelf. That is where I found the following narrative. It’s funny, because the author says “not much is known about…” and then launches into a 3,500+ word essay on St. Patrick and St. Brigid. What I share below is just the part about St. Patrick, his story, and how he has been depicted in the art of the Church. (more…) Read more

The Administration is getting good at squeezing off little last minute notices right before the end of the work week on Fridays. Come to think of it, they’ve been doing that since they announced the “Accommodation” back on February 10. The Washington Examiner has the details, (more…) Read more

One of the things I enjoy about sharing movies with you during Lent is…seeing movies that I missed when they came around the first time. This is one of those films, and it’s called Saint Ralph. Here’s the set up, which sounds like it’s perfect for my house full of teens (and one tween). (more…) Read more

Says who? Says First Amendment scholar, and Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, Thomas J. Curry. As a newbie Catholic, and a layman, I’m not familiar with Bishop Curry, or his studies on this issue. Over at the Catholic University of America, though, he recently gave a lecture on the constitutionality of the HHS Mandate. (more…) Read more

And the reason? The unconstitutional HHS Mandate, of course. As Frank O’Brien notes, the mandate doesn’t just violate the conscience of religious institutions, but those of all free peoples. The Catholic News Agency has the report, A Missouri business owner has become the first employer of a for-profit, secular company to bring a lawsuit challenging the Obama administration’s contraception mandate. Way back at the end of January and into early February, I was pretending to pilot the Space Shuttle into orbit. Remember those heady days when ya’ll (29,172 of you) signed the little petition that could? Exciting times on the USS Freedom of Concience! Well, what we have here is the sights and sounds of the launch of the Space Shuttle from the perspective of the reusable solid propellant boosters. (more…) Read more

Do you know where political careers go to die? Upon the rock that is the Church. God Himself said that, “upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” So if anyone needs to blink in this game of chicken the President and his Administration are playing, it is the Administration, and not the Church. Maybe in another country, see, one without a strong tradition of the rule of law,... Read more
