29. Death and Rebirth in Marriage Part 2
We start off part 2 with Jeff and Tonya's wedding, according to Jeff the worst day of his life. Spoiler alert: Jeff gets punched. By Tonya. Have you ever heard something described as "a train wreck falling off the empire state building crushing everything underneath it and shrapnel flying everywhere?" No? Well you're about to. And yet they're still married all these years later. We find out how. NOTE: Zack, Scott & Jeff recorded a short intro with our thoughts on episode 28 and sets up 29. Audio quality is not good. Even for us. Jeff blames the devil and spiritual warfare. But actually we recorded on a cell phone headphone mic by mistake (Zack's fault). Silver lining is, via the Contrast Principal the rest of the episode sounds a lot better. Here's to optimism! Grace Peace Cheers! 30. Depression Is My Superpower
Justin Blank is a preachers kid. Does he live up to the stereotype that goes along with that? Why growing up a fat kid (his words) makes him funny. And how has depression, of which he's struggled with since he was 12, become his superpower. Plus he has dating app advice for Scott and a remedy for Jeff's hairy palms. I guess a better question to ask is...What does Justin NOT have the answer to. This was a blast. 32. Science Mike McHargue (The Definitive Conversation)
Ever wonder what the Apostle Peter's last meal was? Could it include bacon? Jeff knows. Also the official tagline of the BBB may have be born and you may consider staying past the "credits". This podcast is AT LEAST a means by which the listener will hear great friends in different states of faith converse with Science Mike McHargue, one of the most huggable storytellers of our time. EVEN IF this is all this podcast is, the aural consumer will hear the fascinating story of the spiritual transformation of said huggable storyteller filtered through the conversational stylings of the hosts of Bro's Bibles & Beer, a podcast that's arguably good for humankind. Andy Stanley (leader of perhaps America's largest church) has caused quite the kerfuffle in evangelical circles regarding biblical authority. Different opinions abound. Plus Zack may be a narcissist about the podcast i.e. when a random guy at church says he'll pray for him, it's because he listens to the podcast right?!?!? And has Jeff accidentally started "church" at a public school? Will he be fired? Oh, and Scott fell asleep during the podcast. 67. Greg Boyd
(http://reknew.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/DSC_7322.jpg) Greg Boyd enters the BBBpod dojo! Our conversation w/ him starts at 22:40 in case you want to skip the tomfoolery and jump right to it. Theologian, pastor, and author: Boyd is Senior Pastor of Woodland Hills Church in St. Paul, Minnesota and President of Reknew.org (http://reknew.org/) We talk about Open Theism (or the open view of the future) and the non-violence of God as laid out in his new books: "The Crucifixion Of The Warrior God (https://www.amazon.com/Crucifixion-Warrior-God-Volumes/dp/1506420753/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508006370&sr=8-1&keywords=crucifixion+of+the+warrior+god)" & "Cross Vision: How The Crucifixion Of Jesus Makes Sense Of Old Testament Violence (https://www.amazon.com/Cross-Vision-Crucifixion-Testament-Violence-ebook/dp/B074GJSPNZ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1508006370&sr=8-2&keywords=crucifixion+of+the+warrior+god)" About ReKnew.org: We live at an exciting juncture of history. The traditional triumphant understanding of the church, known as “Christendom,” is crumbling. Out of its rubble is rising a grass-roots global movement of people who are captivated by the vision of a Jesus-looking God raising up a Jesus-looking people to transform the world in a Jesus-kind of way. And as this new kingdom wine is bursting the old wineskins of Christendom, believers and skeptics alike are being forced to rethink everything they thought they knew about the Christian faith and life. ReKnew exists to fuel this exciting movement and to serve those who find themselves in the midst of this rethinking process. Led by best-selling author, teacher, and theologian Greg Boyd (http://reknew.org/about/greg-boyd/), Reknew invites believers and skeptics alike to ask tough questions and consider a renewed picture of God and of his kingdom. Adam C. English join us to talk about the real St. Nick! "The history of Nicholas presents a tantalizing riddle. At first, there is nothing―no writings, disciples, or major acts. Then, curiously, story fragments and rumors begin to surface like driftwood in the water. (https://ajoyfulprocession.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/img_1223-6.jpg) Brandon Andress joins us to talk about his excellent new book, "Beauty In The Wreckage: Finding Peace In The Age Of Outrage". Brandon is a prophetic voice for our time calling us to move beyond the "either or" & "in or out" mentality. Get into it and let us know what you think! Beauty in the Wreckage is a profound and poetic book that explores: What it means to experience life to the fullest in the middle of so much pain and suffering, hostility and division, stress and anxiety. Moving beyond the labels, hierarchies, stereotypes, antagonisms, and divisions within our culture and society. The possibility of experiencing life to the fullest once you have been through painful and traumatic life situations or suffering. How the experience of shalom leads to a deeper life of transformation and invites us to become who we were always meant to be. How a deeply-rooted and intimately-connected community, or family, nourishes and strengthens us to experience greater depths of shalom. How the experience of shalom not only transform us individually and relationally, but also begins to transform our communities and our world. brandonandress.com/ (https://brandonandress.com/) - www.quoir.com/ (http://www.quoir.com/) - Buy Beauty In The Wreckage HERE! 107. God Can't w/ Thomas Jay Oord
(http://thomasjayoord.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/tom_laughing.jpg) Thomas Oord joins us to for a conversation about God's uncontrolling love. And if God's love is uncontrolling, it turns out there's a lot God can't do. Tons of implications so get into it! Thomas Jay Oord is a theologian, philosopher, and scholar of multi-disciplinary studies. Oord is a best-selling and award-winning author, having written or edited more than twenty-five books. A twelve-time Faculty Award winning professor, Oord teaches at institutions around the globe. A gifted speaker, Oord is known for his contributions to research on love, open and relational theology, science and religion, and the implications of freedom and relationships for transformation. http://thomasjayoord.com/ (http://thomasjayoord.com/) Get the book, "God Can't: (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1948609126/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0)How to Believe in God and Love after Tragedy, Abuse, and Other Evils (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1948609126/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0)" About the book: "Hurting people ask heart-felt questions about God and suffering. Some "answers" they receive appeal to mystery: “God’s ways are not our ways”. Some answers say God allows evil for a greater purpose. Some say evil is God's punishment. The usual answers fail. They don't support the truth God loves everyone all the time. God Can't gives a believable answer to why a good and powerful God doesn't prevent evil.Author Thomas Jay Oord says God’s love is inherently uncontrolling. God loves everyone and everything, so God can't control anyone or anything. This means God cannot prevent evil singlehandedly. God can’t stop evildoers, whether human, animal, organisms, or inanimate objects and forces. In God Can't, Oord gives a plausible reason why some are healed but many others are not. God always works to heal everyone, but sometimes our bodies, organisms, or other creatures do not cooperate with God's healing work. Or the conditions of creation are not right for the healing God wants to do. Some people think God causes or allows suffering to teach us lessons or build our character. God Can't disagrees. Oord says God squeezes good from the evil God didn’t want in the first place. God uses pain and suffering without willing or even allowing it.Most people think God can overcome evil singlehandedly. In God Can't, Oord says God needs cooperation for love to reign now and later. This leads to a better view of the afterlife he calls, “relentless love.” It rejects traditional ideas of heaven, hell, and annihilation. Relentless love holds to the possibility all creatures and all creation will respond to God’s love.God Can't is written in understandable language. Thomas Jay Oord's status as a world-renown theologian brings credibility to the book’s radical ideas. He explains these ideas through true stories, illustrations, and scripture. God Can't is for those who want answers to tragedy, abuse, and other evils that make sense!" Where my theology nerds at? Matthew J Korpman joins us for a robust conversation on his provocative book "Saying No to God: A Radical Approach to Reading the Bible Faithfully". Seventh Day Adventism done right (and wrong), the Abraham story your sunday school teacher didn't tell you, hell as a developing idea throughout scripture and so much more. Put these tasty aural morsels inside of you and let us know what you think! After we recorded Matthew wanted to clarify something he missed and wishes he said during an exchange with Scott (SPOILER ALERT): “I went into my Greek NT to check on Scott’s rebuttal because I wanted to make sure things were all right. I’m afraid I backed down when I shouldn’t have 😉 Porneia is a broad umbrella category that includes adultery (moixatai) within it as one of a number of unlawful sexual activity within a marriage. Thus, Scott’s point that the words are different is not a rebuttal to my point but simply notes that the conditions for divorce in Matthew are multiple and wider than one narrow category, allowing for various unlawful practices, including adultery among them. I feel bad now for having acknowledged Scott as right without double checking, but I didn’t want to take time away from the interview to double check. The point was meant to be a small one and not a large debate.“ If that isn't a tease to listen I don't know what is! Kevin Sweeney joins us to talk about his provocative new book: " The Making of a Mystic: My Journey with Mushrooms, My Life as a Pastor, and Why It’s Okay For Everyone to Relax ". Can psilocybin (AKA Magic mushrooms) lead someone to Christ? The answer is yes and Kevin tells us all about it. Dig in and let us know what you think. About the book: “There is an increasing interest in the mystics, contemplative faith, and what this feels like in real life. We have teachers who can explain the path and help us understand, but we need guides who have experienced the path, and who can show us how it unfolds. This is what the making of a mystic is about. While everyone is talking about deconstruction, their faith falling apart, and the dark night of the soul, this book is written from the place of joy, freedom, and light on the other side.” About Kevin: He is the host of the podcast “ The Church Needs Therapy ” and is the author of the forthcoming books, “The Making of a Mystic: My Journey with Mushrooms, My Life as a Pastor, and Why It’s Okay For Everyone to Relax,” out on May 31st, and “The Joy of Letting Go” which will be out in January 2023. 201. BONNIE KRISTIAN on The Knowledge Crisis Breaking Our Brains
Bonnie Kristian returns to the show and we have a compelling conversation about her new book " Untrustworthy: The Knowledge Crisis Breaking Our Brains, Polluting Our Politics, and Corrupting Christian Community". About the book: "Which news stations should I watch to be a responsible news consumer? How do I know what is true and whom I can trust? What can I do to combat all the misinformation and how it's impacting people I care about? Many Americans are agonizing over questions such as these, feeling unsure and overwhelmed in today's chaotic information environment. American life and politics are suffering from a raging knowledge crisis, and the church is no exception. In Untrustworthy , Bonnie Kristian unpacks this crisis and explores ways to combat it in our own lives, families, and church communities. Drawing from her extensive experience in journalism and her training as a theologian, Kristian explores social media, political and digital culture, online paranoia, and the press itself. She explains factors that contribute to our confusion and helps Christians pay attention to how we consume content and think about truth. Finally, she provides specific ways to take action, empowering readers to avoid succumbing to or fueling the knowledge crisis." https://www.bonniekristian.com/ Bonnie is the author of Untrustworthy: The Knowledge Crisis Breaking Our Brains, Polluting Our Politics, and Corrupting Christian Community (2022) and A Flexible Faith: Rethinking What It Means to Follow Jesus Today (2018). As a deputy editor and acting editor-in-chief at The Week , Bonnie writes and edits opinion pieces on foreign policy, religion, criminal justice, urbanism, civil liberties, electoral politics, and more. Her column, "The Lesser Kingdom," appears in print and online at Christianity Today. Her work has also been published at outlets including USA Today , Defense One , the Los Angeles Times , CNN, Politico , Time , Reason , National Interest , and The American Conservative. A graduate of Bethel Seminary, she lives in Pittsburgh with her husband and twin sons. 225. Professional Christian Guest REBUKES Heretic Podcast Host
Friend of the show and professional Christian, Carey Robinson returns for a ridiculously robust conversation on what you, check that, what Zack needs to believe to be a Christian. Turns out you can care deeply about and be friends with someone whilst disagreeing vehemently on important theological matters. It gets contentious but ultimately there's nothing but love. Additionally, he made us amazing Old Fashioneds with secret bitters. Furthermore, the Cowboys suck. 232. There Is No Biblical Worldview. Now What?
Join your favorite Bros as they dive into the potential differences between a biblical worldview and a Christlike worldview. While a biblical worldview often encompasses various interpretations and perspectives, a Christlike worldview may offer a more nuanced and practical approach rooted in the teachings and life of Jesus Christ. What are the differences and do they matter? We react to a couple of clips from Charlie Kirk and Alisa Childers that are supposed to define a biblical worldview but may make things less clear. Whether you're a seasoned believer or someone exploring spirituality, this episode promises valuable insights and practical wisdom for navigating the intersection of faith, values, and the human experience. Plus some inappropriate humor, listener feedback and whatnot. Let us know where you're at with all of this and join the conversation. Episode produced by Jeff Rogers. 234. Worship Leader And Former Bethel Student Shares Her Story (Courtney Lancaster)
Courtney Lancaster from the Heal/Create Podcast joins us and shares her powerful story, including her time as a worship leader at Bethel Church. It seems most either have negative or positive opinions about what Bethel Church is up to. Courtney is more nuanced about her time there. Learn about some of the spiritual baggage she brought into, and out of Bethel, how she learned to heal from trauma, how this has unlocked her ability to create, and how she wants to help others (maybe you?) heal so they can unlock their creative potential. Plus listener feedback, what we're consuming, & Courtney survives (endures?) a round of Jeff's Rapid Fire. "Healing is so possible, and my hope is that everything that I offer reminds you of who you truly are, helps you heal what’s in the way, and returns you to your creative power, once and for all." About Courtney from www.courtneylancaster.co: "I was so deeply identified as a victim that I couldn’t see a path forward. The only thing I knew how to do for a while was just wake up every morning. I had two small children, crippling anxiety and depression, and a broken heart full of dreams that I had no idea how to move towards. It wasn’t always like this. I had been a worship leader and a performer, singing for thousands of people on big stages, and I had dreams of so much more. I have always wanted to sing, to pursue music and express myself through art for as long as I could remember. There were signs of stress, anxiety, and overwhelm as I navigated my adulthood and pursued them, but I didn’t know how to face them, so I ignored them. It wasn’t until a series of panic attacks upended my entire life that I realized that avoiding my pain wasn’t going to work. 9 years ago, I began the journey of healing. I was in therapy, coaching, and reading books every day trying to figure out how to clear the fog and calm the fear, but for awhile, I was just treading water. I was circling around and around my pain, but not resolving anything. I had heard that you needed to “ feel it to heal it” , so I thought my ticket out was in feeling as much of my pain as possible. This only left me in deep disregulation, completely frozen and struggling with terrifying dissociation. I know darkness really, really well. I did find safety, slowly. I found the right support (something I will teach you how to do, if you need it), and I began to come out of the black hole I had found myself in, but I was still struggling with identity, and missing the vibrancy I had experienced years earlier and still hoped for."
