No person has the right to condemn you on how you repair your heart or how you choose to grieve, because no one knows how much you’re hurting. Recovering from a loss takes time and everyone heals at their own pace, in their own time. The corporate three days policy doesn’t mean that the person is over it in three days. When my mom passed away, I was in planning mode and never got the time to grieve. It was ten months later when it all hit me. There is no normal when it comes to grief. You are allowed to grieve and go through the myriad of emotions. And it may be twenty years after the passing when the memories and missing come flooding back all over again, and the grief process starts at the very beginning.

We aren’t given a manual on how to grieve or how to help someone grieve, and even if there is one, it’s hardly the beach read anyone wants to do. The empathic side of most humans wants to take the hurt away, or to run away from the hurt. Some people are better at giving comfort and love than others.

And sometimes people say really stupid stuff too, thinking they are helping. Some just want you to get over it because they don’t know how to deal with it, or they just don’t want to deal with it. Grief is personal, and whether you are grieving a human or a pet, grief is grief and it sucks.  You don’t get over it, you walk through the muck of it all. And then when you think you are almost to the end, sometimes the rewind button is pressed and you do it all again. Grief is personal and everyone’s experience is different.

To learn what NOT to say to someone grieving, and what might help instead order Messages From a Wonderful Afterlife: Signs Loved Ones Send from Beyond.
