“Daniel wiped the sweat from his forehead with a cloth before the salty liquid could run into his eyes. It had been a long, exhausting day. He looked at Levi lying on the make-shift stretcher on the ground. Levi’s eyes were closed. Some sweat had accumulated on his face too, so Daniel wiped it away. Levi opened his eyes. “Are we there?” he asked. “Yes,” Daniel gave Levi’s arm a squeeze. He meant it to be reassuring but then remembered Levi couldn’t feel anything from is neck done. Their other three friends had wandered over to the well to fill up their jugs. It had taken most of the day to carry Levi here, and they were all thirsty and tired, yet anxious and excited to see what would happen next.”

Can’t you just picture yourself there? After each description, Blackmer unpacks the significance of Jesus’ response to them. With each encounter, it became clearer to me how down-to-earth Jesus really is. His response always met each person or group of people right where they were in life. He never used words that wouldn’t resonate with them personally. His words broke through any barrier that society may have placed on those people–ordinary folks like you and me. Most of all, His words opened up their hearts and minds to His great love and how faith in Him changes everything.
