Here are six great bible verses that encourage us to save money.

Proverbs 10:4-5 “A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.”

A “slack hand” is a hand that is hesitant to work and it causes poverty to be sure. The diligent hand makes rich, at least in supplying all their needs. When summer is here, it’s time to make hay but if you slumber at harvest time, it’s going to be a long, cold, hungry winter.

Luke 14:28 “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?”

Jesus wants us to count the cost of discipleship. How high is this cost? Jesus tells us “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26) and “Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27) so that’s why we should sit down and count the cost first to see if we’re really committed to being His disciple or not because it may cost us relationships among our family, friends, and co-workers.

Proverbs 13:11 “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.”

This speaks to me about “get rich” gimmicks. There are so many scams and phishing schemes out there that we have to be really careful that in our pursuit of wealth that it doesn’t make us take greater risks than we normally would. The best way to ensure a steady supply of wealth is to gain it “little by little” for only they who do this will “increase it” It’s that grinding it out over a 40+ week, month after month and year after year that can give us some financial security. If someone truly knew how to make a fortune, why would they ever try to sell it? Oh yeah, to make money from their own scam.

Romans 13:8 “Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.”

Paul thinks it’s best to stay out of debt and that is always true. No one ever prospered or saved money by being in and staying in a lot of debt. Paul ties into this owing no one money with loving one another and thus, fulfilling the law. Perhaps some had loaned money to a brother or sister and they never paid it back on time or at all. This can cause a great deal of friction and also make it harder to be more loving to one another.

Proverbs 13:22 “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.”

I saw a bumper sticker that once read “I’m spending my children’s inheritance.” Yes, it was funny and there’s nothing wrong with spending your retirement money but a good plan is to save money for one’s own children. We did for over twenty years and this allowed our daughter to be able to go to college. The converse is so also true that a sinner’s wealth is going to be used by someone else and not the sinner because they can’t take it with them. The irony is that the sinner saved it but the righteous received it.

Proverbs 21:20 “Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man’s dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.”

It is so easy to spend money, especially after you get paid, but I have learned it is best to automatically deduct from your paycheck at least a certain amount for savings. A foolish man devours it right after he gets it. I had a friend who I felt so badly for and tried to help him yet he refused and his custom was that every payday he’d go and cash his check and spend over half of it on one night in the bar. Sometimes he made bad choices and being under the influence of alcohol, he had a few nights when he lost it all.

Conclusion

Maybe you noticed a pattern; half of the Bible verses about saving money were from the Book of Proverbs. I used so many of these because so many are applicable to our everyday lives. We are all stewards over that which God has blessed us with and He expects us to use it for His glory, Jesus said in Matthew 25:23 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master” so if you are faithful even in the small things, like money, you’ll be faithful in the big things; like when you enter into the kingdom of heaven where you’ll be entrusted with much.
