So you’ve heard people talk about Flannery O’Connor and how deeply Catholic she is, and maybe you’ve glanced at her stories and been repelled. As Tod Worner suggests, try out her collected letters.
I agree wholeheartedly. Her letters are what hooked me. I am so glad that they were published.
I will have to look up her letters: I can’t say that I’ve ever felt a strong connection to her fiction. At the time I was reading it in college, I was a lapsed Catholic, and perhaps that is why I missed that dimension of her work, or perhaps it was because I admired her, but I didn’t like her.
In all honesty, I’ve not really connected with her fiction, either. But I enjoyed her letters considerably.
