We cannot break the glass ceiling if we do not recognize that it is glass. We cannot celebrate diversity, freedom, acceptance and love of one another if we are too busy pretending or ignoring the fact that we STILL do not understand what any of those words mean, and we do not practice it today. And having a BBQ with fireworks does not equate freedom, it is a distraction from the true fight that many Americans are still fighting….. unless we remember. Read more

This week's digest is full of very interesting studies on transgenerational trauma, historical oppression, Nina Simone, Dr. Joy Degruy, Melissa Harris-Perry, "columbusing", some comedy, racial profiling, Freedom Summer, Angela Davis, and more. It is a power packed week of Black culture, privilege and intersectionality information and sources. And like on the other weeks, I include very personal reflections of culture as well. This uncovering of ancestral information will be a lifelong process for my son that I will help start with discussions, stories, explanations, and information about who we are and where we come from. The ability to gather knowledge that shines a light on our inner core, gives us access to our ancestral power in a way that isn’t previously imaginable. We are a powerful people, spiritually aligned with the mission of resilience and cultured by the magic of our history. Read more

Exploring topics of culture and intersectionality, such as colorism, beauty, culture, the prison industrial complex, and even the relationship between African and Black. Power packed week full of topics to stretch our understanding of what culture is, and how that plays into privilege, the lack of privilege, intersectionality and ultimately.... spirituality. I was conditioned to sit in that chair, stiff as a doll, while a metal comb was racked across my scalp so that my savage curls could be transformed into straight, flowing hair. A reminder that I was not beautiful as I was; only beautiful when I was able to look like something I was not. And when it was time to wash out the whiteness that came at the end of a smoking metal comb, I would dread the hours of combing through my unruly blackness, blow drying, and hot combing it again. A process that would take hours, but would begin to signify my conditioned perception of beauty until I became 36 years old and began to really question who I was underneath the perm, endless amount of hours, and burned flesh. Read more

She was magic. Maya was and is magic; she is the best kind of magic. She was the kind of magic that wrapped her intent into a rhythm that spoke to the heart, singing a song of love that always promoted reflection. She stood in her black skin, and whispered words that motivated and encouraged millions. She was a change agent, skilled in the art of the tongue, speaking the language of the Gods without pause. Read more

So this year, the 30 Day Real Black History Challenge will continue: same time, same bat channel. This year I plan to focus a little more on exploring the concepts of Black culture, and the application of intersectionality to the experiences of Black people past and present. Just the word 'privilege' can incite a riot on the discussion boards, and in almost any conversation with others, and so it is one concept I think we should continue to explore over and over again. If we cannot understand what privilege and intersectionality are, then we will not be able to recognize their impact on the various populations of people whom we claim to serve, protect, and care for. Read more

The immanent Goddess is not only in the great outdoors. You can even bring the Goddess home with you. Honestly, she was always there to begin with. One of the many reasons why I like doing my daily rituals at home is because it reminds that nature is home. The Goddess is in my house with me every morning, day and night. Read more
