College students banned from handing out Constitution unless in ‘free speech zone’

College students banned from handing out Constitution unless in ‘free speech zone’ March 31, 2017

Colleges and universities, what once were were bastions for the free exchange of ideas, are fast becoming fascist camps of liberal groupthink.

Take for example Pierce College in Los Angeles, where a student was recently told to stop handing out copies of the Constitution. His crime was daring to walk outside of the designated “free speech zone” set up on campus to distribute materials, which amounts to the size of about three parking spaces, according to Fox News.

The student, 27-year-old Kevin Shaw, was handing out Spanish-language copies of the Constitution in November of last year when a college administrator approached and told him to stop. He was instructed to apply for a permit to hand out the pocket Constitutions in the free speech zone only. If he didn’t comply, hew would be asked to leave the campus. That’s a pretty steep penalty for handing out the laws our nation is founded on. Since when did college administrators rise above the right to free speech guaranteed by the Constitution?

Shaw said, “When I attempted to hand out copies of the Constitution that day, my only intention was to get students thinking about our founding principles and to inspire discussion of liberty and free speech. I had no idea I would be called upon to defend those very ideals against Pierce’s unconstitutional campus policies.”

Now, Shaw is suing the Los Angeles Community College District with the help of FIRE, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, for violating his First Amendment rights.

“Students like Kevin go to college to learn and grow in conversation with their peers, but a free speech quarantine like Pierce’s threatens to punish students who speak their minds in the wrong place,” said FIRE’s Marieke Tuthill Beck-Coon. “The law is clear: Public colleges like Pierce can’t force students into tiny slices of campus to exercise their First Amendment rights.”

This should give you some idea as to how far the progressive agenda has taken college campuses across America. You know it’s bad when administrators keep students from getting their hands on the Constitution. Perhaps they’re threatened by all of the freedom and liberty found in its pages.
