Vatican to atheists: let's talk

Well, who’d a thunk? How long until they get their own ordinariate?

From the Religion News Service:

The Vatican announced a new initiative aimed at promoting dialogue between theists and atheists to be launched with a two-day event this March in Paris.

The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture will sponsor a series of seminars on the theme of “Religion, Light and Common Reason,” at various locations in the city, including Paris-Sorbonne University.

The events will conclude with a party for youth in the courtyard of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, followed by prayer and meditation inside the cathedral.

The initiative, called “Courtyard of the Gentiles,” takes its name from a section of the ancient Temple of Jerusalem accessible to non-Jews, which Pope Benedict XVI has used as a metaphor for dialogue between Catholics and non-believers.

“I believe that the church should also today open a sort of `courtyard of the gentiles’ where men can in some way hook on to God, without knowing him and before having gained access to his mystery,” Benedict said in Dec. 2009.

  1. “—-hook onto God—-“? Sounds a little like a promotion for the church. Let’s go and attempt to convince some more folks that we have the only way to God. OOPS! These folks don’t believe in God!! Could really be interesting to be at the event.

  2. This is actually typical Benedict XVI…

He has engaged and debated non-believers on numerous occasions and has a friendly relationship with many well-known atheists including Jurgen Habermas, Giuliano Ferrara, Marcello Pera and the late, fiery Oriana Fallaci.

In fact, Peter Seewald, the German interviewer of the pope’s recent book, “Light of the World” was an atheist…until his first interview book with the then, Cardinal Ratzinger,”Salt of the Earth”. By the end of the discussion, he embraced the faith of his youth.

  3. “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

  4. Would it have been better to say ‘hook up’ with him? LOL Then again the atheist would rather hook up with anything but a deity. Thank God for penicillin. (sic)

  5. Now Robert, I am certain that the atheists would not infringe on Catholic priests’ rights by hooking up with altar boys.

  6. I wouldn’t be so sure about that. I hear that the membership roles at NAMBLA is filled with hot blooded atheists waiting for their moment.

  7. Mindless pittter patter. i wouldn’t be so quick on the draw to point a finger anywhere, someone might bite it off.

  8. This particular article has nothing to do with the abuse scandal associated with the RCC. How did that get into this discussion? I’d like to know how many “converts” they get from the group of atheists that attend. :o)
