Ordination update: 19 new deacons for Sacramento

Ordination update: 19 new deacons for Sacramento June 29, 2014

A reader alerted me to this yesterday, but I haven’t seen any pictures or official reports yet.  (Anybody have any pictures?)

But here’s the scoop from the diocesan website:

The Diocese of Sacramento will welcome 19 men into the permanent diaconate during their ordination Mass on Saturday, June 28 at 11 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacramento, located at 11th and K Streets in Sacramento. Bishop Jaime Soto will preside at the Mass.

Those to be ordained to the order of deacons, a ministry of justice and charity, sacrament and word, are: Brad Bell, John Bockman, David Cabrera, Sergio Diaz, John Fio, Paul Friedrich, Lawrence Hiner, Mark Hronicek, Sang Dominic Kim, David Leatherby, Timothy Louie, Juan Moreno, James Ogbonna, Dennis Purificacion, Mark Ruiz, Paul Sajben, Michael Turner, Robert Vandergraaf and Charles Warner.

As ministers of word, deacons proclaim the Gospel, preach and teach in the name of the church. As ministers of sacrament, deacons baptize, lead the faithful in prayer, witness marriages, and conduct wake and funeral services. As ministers of charity, deacons are leaders in identifying the needs of others, then marshaling the church’s resources to meet those needs. Deacons are also dedicated to eliminating the injustices or inequities that cause such needs. But no matter what specific functions a deacon performs, they flow from his sacramental identity.

Congratulations, brothers, and welcome!

Ad multos annos!

I hope to post more when I know more.
