Donald Trump said that he wants to change the Republican platform so that it allows for abortion in the case of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother.
This makes no difference to Christian followers like activistย Phyllis Schafly, even though she rejects those exceptions (unlike other recent Republican nominees) and formerly fought other attempts to change the platform on this issue. ย The current language calls for a human life amendment and for legislation to apply the 14th amendment to unborn children.

The GOP platform, which is formally adopted at the Republican National Convention, has included language every election year since 1984 with support for a human life amendment to the Constitution and a call for โlegislation to make it clear that the Fourteenth Amendmentโs protections apply to unborn children.โ
(The 14th Amendment says no state shall โdeprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.โ)
When Trump appeared in a town hall segment on NBCโs Today Show Thursday morning, host Savannah Guthrie asked about that language: โThe Republican platform, every four years, has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child shall not be infringed. And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the exceptions that you have?โ
โYes I would. Yes I would. Absolutely,โ Trump responded. โFor the three exceptions, I would.โ
