“The Sound of Music” for a New Generation: Carrie Underwood Brings Energy to Role of Maria

Watch live!  Win prizes!

It is my sincere pleasure this evening to offer you a chance to win some really cool stuff!  I have two giveaway packets for “The Sound of Music” that include a poster, T-shirt and CD featuring songs from the musical, including a few from Carrie Underwood.

Two lucky readers will win these “The Sound of Music” giveaway packets on December 5.

Winners will be selected from those who comment on this post between now and December 4; I’ll announce the winners on December 5, the same day the stage presentation will be broadcast live on NBC.

The stage performance will be broadcast live only once, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time December 5 on NBC.  It’s quite a challenge, both for the cast and for the producers:  As Carrie Underwood says, they’ll be singing and dancing “in front of the entire universe”!

“First Look,” the new promo video, has just been released and will give you an idea what to look forward to.

Below is the press release I’ve received, announcing the special live presentation.

Iconic musical arrives just in time for Christmas

I have no idea who Carrie Underwood is…but I LOVE THE SOUND OF MUSIC! My mom and dad got us hooked on the movie when we were kids. My favorite scene is when the nuns admit to disabling the Nazi’s cars during the escape of the Von Trapps!

Carrie is a very successful country superstar, but she can sing any genre. She has 6 Grammys and a Gospel Music Award for Jesus Take the Wheel, a beautiful Christian song. She also wrote a beautiful song called Temporary Home and See You Again, both inspirational Faith based songs you might enjoy.

“How do you stop a problem like Maria?” 🙂

  • ny4carrie

Carrie is amazing! I cannot wait for this! The clips are beautiful! And Julie Andrews gave Carrie her blessing and approves. Can’t wait!

My favorite scene among many is when the Captain professes his love for Maria. I highly recommend Maria von Trapp’s book “The Sotry of the Trapp Family Singers.” The Trapp family’s faith is clear throughout the book and one can see how the true story is different from the movie, with both stories being equally inspiring.

I can’t believe NBC is doing this! What great wholesome entertainment. I love the “live” angle. My husband and I attended a “live” opera production from the MET at local movie theatre. I wasn’t so excited to go see it, but I loved it. Not only was the quality amazing, the idea that it was live added so much to the experience. No chance for retakes, they have to get it right. Thanks for letting us know about this, Kathy!

  • Neva Lindsey

Love the movie and love Carrie! I’m looking forward to this!

  • Christi

My favorite part was the gazebo scene between Maria and the Captain and he whispers, “Oh my love.”

  • Johanne Newell

I’m not going to be able to actually watch this, I’m going to be otherwise occupied that evening. To be truthful, I don’t even have TV, so I can’t record it. So, um… any other viewing options you can suggest?

My seven year old Annie loves the scene where Maria runs up the steps outside and places one hand on her head and the other arm straight up in the air. She recreates the scene every time.

She also calls me over to the TV every time Edelweiss is sung. I know that Christopher Plummer grew annoyed at how many people gushed their enthusiasm over this film (and thus forgetting the rest of his great career) but the original movie is a solid hit.

Carrie is a great singer so I’ll be watching to see if she can do the role justice.

  • Stephanie Mann

My favorite scene is the Landler dance at the great ball. Second favorite is the Captain and the Baroness calling off their engagement: “Somewhere out there is a lady who I think will never be a nun. Auf Wiedersehen, darling.”

  • Sue from Buffalo

Thanks for this contest. I love the Sound of Music. it’ll be really interesting to see how Carrie Underwood and the new cast fares tonight.

Favorite part was Mother Superior singing Climb Every Mountain.
It became my inspiration song for life.
