How do you like the site redesign?

As you may have noticed (or not, if you use a reader), Patheos has upgraded its entire site, and the blogs got a bit of a redo in the process. For one thing, they’re a bit more integrated into Patheos as a whole, and for another thing, they’re a bit more connected to the other blogs in their channel (Love Joy Feminism is in the atheist channel).

While I can’t control most of the site design, I can play with the widgets in the sidebar. Let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see there that’s not. Also, because the site change made my tabs’ size change, I took the opportunity to reorganize them completely. Feel free to take a look and let me know what you think! I want the tabs to be something people use, not just something that sits there.

The best thing about the site redesign, in my opinion? When you click to see the Patheos blogs, as in all the blogs for all the channels, my blog is listed FIRST. Which is impressive given that Patheos has something like a hundred blogs! I feel special. :-P

Really though, let me know what complaints you may have, because I can send them to the Patheos people. The new site design will get some tweaking over the coming months as people say what works and what doesn’t, etc.

About Libby Anne

Libby Anne grew up in a large evangelical homeschool family highly involved in the Christian Right. College turned her world upside down, and she is today an atheist, a feminist, and a progressive. She blogs about leaving religion, her experience with the Christian Patriarchy and Quiverfull movements, the detrimental effects of the "purity culture," the contradictions of conservative politics, and the importance of feminism.

    I don’t like it :(

    • Libby Anne

Well now, that was specific! :-P

For tabs, I might suggest rearranging a couple things. (This is all personal preference, but hey, you asked!) Maybe you could have a tab entitled something like “social issues” and have feminism, purity, LGBT rights, reproductive rights, etc. Then instead of “growing up in a subculture” (which I don’t like so much because I think it sounds pretty vague at first glance), you could title it “Evangelical Christian [sub]culture” with CP, Homeschooling, Christian Right, etc. I guess what I’m saying is that I think it would work better to rearrange the current politics, gender, and subculture tabs in some way. And btw, I do use the tabs. :)

Also, the very last widget on the sidebar is strange. It has a couple of random posts (can’t figure out how it chose them?) listed in full, and it makes the page SUPER long, so you have to scroll forever to get to the bottom.

Overall, though, I’m not a fan of Patheos’ new design in general, it appears more cluttered and the ads seem more prominent. But that can’t be helped by you of course. At least I use a reader most of the time.

The huge long random posts thing was a glitch – I was trying to set that widget up when you were looking at my sidebar. :-P I now have it set up so that it shows ten randomly selected posts from all my time blogging, and shows only a small snippet from each. I like the idea of its pulling up random posts from the past so that it’s not like they’re dead forever. :-P

Also, I actually really liked your suggestion for the tabs, so I did some reorganizing. What are your thoughts now?

Re: tabs, I like it much better, yes. :) Except, now it appears your “god” tab has disappeared. Not sure if you did that on purpose, but if not I figured you might like to know.

I’m fine with what you’ve done with the tabs but I really don’t like Patheos new design (it’s pretty ugly). I liked it better before but I guess there’s nothing you can do about it and with time we’ll get used to it. I preferred the link to the comments below the article but it’s just my personal preference and I’m not asking for having it changed

Perhaps have the tabs buttons above in another colours, white + white isn’t very pretty imho.

Only thing that bothers me isn’t on your site, but it seems to have lost the Disqus integration with user avatars. Yours are fine, Friendly Atheist, not so much.

For Patheos in general, I don’t like how the ‘comments’ button is now at the top of the article, I keep having to scroll back up. The whole overview is crowded and rather ugly, but I guess we’ll get used to it.
I also think the text for the sidebar under the “Selection of Random Posts” is a bit too big- it’s twice the size of everything else and it just looks out of place.

I notified the patheos tech guy and he said he’s put moving the comments button on the top of his list.

As for the other…I’ll look into correcting that. Not sure…

I don’t like that I can’t navigate from one post directly to another. I have to go back to your main page and then choose the new post. I also wish the comments link was at the bottom of the post, not the top.

    • Libby Anne

Yikes! I’ve just notified my patheos tech guy of that, and he said he’s put it on the top of his list to fix!

  • MadGastronomer

I’d really like to have the “Recent Comments” in the sidebar moved back up the page, and even more I’d like to have back different colors for read and unread links, so I can tell what I’ve looked at.

    • Paula G V aka Yukimi

The unread/read links on different colours is a great point ^^

    Since you asked…
I hate it. I come here for you and FA only because I have to–I don’t like the network being pushed in my face (I don’t mind the sidebar connection to Patheos, but the whole header thing is intrusive and makes your banner too small and too far down the page). The other two most annoying things have already been mentioned: post to post navigation and the comment link at the top of the post instead of the bottom.

I wish there was still a preview button down here at the comments. It’s nice to do a quick proof of my comments, seeing them as they will appear, before posting; it helps me catch typos and such.
