Documentaries: The Purity Myth

In putting together my blog’s tabs, I’ve been trying to incorporate documentaries I’ve found useful or informative or interesting. This one, The Purity Myth, deals with the harm done by the emphasis many in our society – and especially what I call the “purity culture” – continue to place on virginity. Sorry I can only offer you the preview!

About Libby Anne

Libby Anne grew up in a large evangelical homeschool family highly involved in the Christian Right. College turned her world upside down, and she is today an atheist, a feminist, and a progressive. She blogs about leaving religion, her experience with the Christian Patriarchy and Quiverfull movements, the detrimental effects of the "purity culture," the contradictions of conservative politics, and the importance of feminism.

As much as conservative Christianity condemns the “loose sexual morals” of today’s times, it’s occurred to me that they also “sell” sex. Rebecca St. James whole platform was based on purity and waiting until marriage, and that’s what her most famous song is. She earned her income by preaching about purity. Is that not also selling yourself through sex? Is that not also making money off of sex?

Actually, wasn’t the whole Sara Palin episode about selling her as a VP MILF? She was primped and packaged in tight school teacher suits to present her political “assets.” If that’s not sexual exploitation while proclaiming purity and wholesome Christian values, then — well, what else would you call it? I guess purity is just another commodity to be offered to get what you want, kinda like the way marriage has evolved through the church — sex is bad until the wedding night, then all that repression and fear just continue until the inevitable divorce because neither partner can disengage from the decades of shame and fear attached to maintaining virginity.
