    I taught “The Hobbit” at a Catholic middle school a few years ago, and we got almost an entire class out of Bilbo’s decision to spare Gollum–the way this scene was clearly informed by Tolkien’s Catholicism, the way it parallels other life issues, debating whether or not this was the correct decision, all sorts of good stuff.
