Actor Chris O’Dowd Says Religion is a Cult and Obama is Not a Christian

Chris O’Dowd, who evidently stars in one of those cable series I’ve never watched called Girls, has shared his original thinking on the topic of religion.

Mr O’Dowd says in an interview with GQ that he used to be “liberal” about religion, and thought it was ok for other people to have ideas he disagreed with. Then, he got his brain washed and now he knows that “religion is ruining the world.” He says that there will be a “turning point” where religion is “going to be like racism.” Because people will decide “you’re not allowed to say that! It’s mad!”

He also informs us that President Obama lies when he says he’s a Christian, telling us, “I mean, you really think that Barack Obama believes in God? No way!”

It’s a bit difficult to take these deep thoughts seriously, so I don’t think I will. Take them seriously, that is. I mean, (to quote Mr O’Dowd) let’s look at what he said.

Religion is ruining the world. That one’s pretty well been done to death.

People will decide you’re not allowed to say that. How many times, in how many ways, have we seen attacks on religious people’s right to freedom of speech? I doubt if this thoughtful young actor understands that’s what he’s supporting, btw. I think he’s just repeating something he heard someone else say and probably doesn’t understand its implications.

President Obama is not a Christian? Do tell.

All in all, what this interview shows — as if we needed to be shown — is the level of non-thinking that goes into bashing religious people in our society. It also demonstrates why the programming we see on television is so biased against faith.

I wouldn’t take Mr O’Dowd’s thinking too seriously. There’s not an original idea here. If his industry’s opinion changes, he’ll get his brain washed again and say something else that’s just as deep and thoughtful as this.

From The Sydney Morning Herald:

Actor Chris O’Dowd thinks following a religion will eventually become as offensive and unacceptable as racism.

The Irish star of films such as The Sapphires and Bridesmaids says he grew up respecting people of faith despite his atheist views, but has become “less liberal” as he ages.

Now he says religious doctrine is halting human progress and brands it “a weird cult”.

He also thinks US president Barack Obama had to overstate his Christian faith in order to get to the White House.

O’Dowd has told Britain’s GQ magazine: “For most of my life, I’ve been, ‘Hey, I’m not into it, but I respect your right to believe whatever you want’. But as time goes on, weirdly, I’m growing less liberal. I’m more like, ‘No, religion is ruining the world, you need to stop!’.

“There’s going to be a turning point where it’s going to be like racism. You know, ‘You’re not allowed to say that weird s**t! It’s mad! And you’re making everybody crazy!’

In healthy traditional societies, actors were classed with prostitutes, and their opinions given comparative interest and weight. Not a bad idea to return to. The notion that we should privilege the mouthings of people whose primary gift is making believe they are someone they are not, is diagnostic. For myself, I’d be much more interested in the opinions of prostitutes (to whom I apologize for classing with actors…and actresses.)

Stephen, I’m sure there are actors who can walk and chew gum, as well as make intelligent comments about current issues. For all I know, Mr O’Dowd is one of them on other topics. But when someone starts drinking the hate kool-aid of Christian bashing, their higher thinking capacities go right out the door. All mindless prejudice and hate does that to people.

Mr O’Dowd sounded like a hopeless flake in these comments. What makes his verbiage serious, is that he is purveying hatred and fomenting discrimination against religious people. Even though he didn’t identify Christians, I think that was his real target.

As for prostitutes, I’ve never met one (and I’ve known quite a few) who didn’t have a genuine craving for the spiritual. These women have been so dehumanized, only Jesus Christ can heal them. He can heal them … and He does.

The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church. That’s why I pray daily for the Christians in Syria, the rest of the Arab world, China, Ukraine. But, I never have been able to figure out why people would listen to somebody who barely graduated high school or maybe didn’t, pretended to be somebody else, and that is their claim to fame. Actors who demonstrate good judgment and sound thought are few. I think I’ll ask The Lord to ask his grandmother to pray for him.
