Obama sans Teleprompter: not pretty – UPDATED

According to Jake Tapper, Obama and Leno talked bowling.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he’s gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

“That’s very good, Mr. President,” Leno said sarcastically.

It’s “like the Special Olympics or something,” the president said.

When asked about the remark, the White House had no comment.

I wonder if NBC will edit that out, for Obama. Nothing would surprise me.

Perhaps President Obama, who received a rather tidy Book Advance just before he was sworn in, (does anyone else remember how Newt Gingrich got castigated for ‘using his office to sell a book’?) should donate some of the proceeds of his advance, say…I dunno, 90% – to the Special Olympics, to show he doesn’t really think that it’s okay to joke about “extra chromosome people” like Al Gore did (yes, I remember everything). Or, at least, that he should not insult disabled people by comparing them to himself, or to political junkies, in general.

As a political junkie, I can say that.

Sigh. One almost gets tired of saying it, but one must say it, still: Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would do with that, had Bush said it. Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done with the Irish PM Teleprompter gaffe (the press has helpfully embargoed the video, so Obama doesn’t have to see it playing 24/7, as Bush would have – had Bush so gaffed). Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done if Bush had given the Prime Minister of Great Britain a lousy pack of 50 “Classic” DVD’s that didn’t work in the UK?

Another story the press isn’t actually covering…

Without the help of the press – hiding his mistakes, never asking a tough or uncomfortable question, not even curious enough to ask to see his grades in college – where would this guy be? I’m thinking he wouldn’t be in the Oval Office, right now, that’s for sure.

So, tonight, he gets forty minutes on Leno. Next week he’ll have all four networks ditching programming and losing money for him. Again.

When things get hot, when the polling isn’t going right, when he feels unloved, or he needs to be happy, he gets on his big, expensive-to-run Air Force One, with his limos, etc, and he steps before the camera.

Gonna be a long four years.

President Bush was no cool cat, but he was a master of self-deprecating humor. I give Obama credit for trying it out…but maybe he’d better practice it more! Patterico notes that the press is playing it down. That’s not surprising. It was a failed attempt at humor, and you know what? I’d love to ignore it, I really would. And I’ll start ignoring these Obama gaffes just as soon as the press gives them the same unending coverage they gave to Bush’s. When the double-standards end.

In an email exchange, the point was made that Obama seems to be everything the left projected about Bush. The stumblebum suit being operated from behind. All those projections. You know about projection, right? It is when you take the thing that is inside you; hate, fear, insecurity, malicious motives, etc – and you project it on to someone else. For instance, during the election, I kept getting emails from folks on the left insisting that Bush – the powermongering fascist – would never allow another election to happen.

That’s maybe the projection I worry about, sometimes.

And now, I guess I understand what all the folks on the left used to feel when they claimed the president “embarrassed” them.

Ed Morrissey writes: You know how you can tell when a President has a bad day? When his comparison of an American corporation to terrorists is the second-stupidest thing he said…

Meanwhile, some amusing photoshops here and here.

I can’t wait to hear what Barack’s Teleprompter has to say about all this!

UPDATE: Please, clue me in, here…is this satire?

“…this president has done more to advance the cause of the developmentally disabled in America than has any other president in the history of the United States.”

He’s been in office 60 days! What is it with these grandiose statements? It’s a joke, right? The WH did not really say that?

Hugh Hewitt notes that Saturday is World Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Nice of Obama to bring awareness!

“Waterhead” Jokes? Stay classy, you two!

Ann Althouse: Doesn’t believe that Obama is avoiding MTP because David Gregory is “too easy.”

Why The Teleprompter Gaffe-tape matters.

A problem with How Obama Thinks.

UPDATE II: I have to ask again… is THIS Satire? This stuff cannot be real!

WELCOME: Instapundit readers, and thanks, Glenn! For some “better” television check this out!. Today we’re also talking about Extreme Sheep-herding!

It is something that we have seen time and time and time again from Barack and from Michelle — the backhanded slap. Even when not purposely and intentionally made, still there are these repeated off-hand remarks deprecating someone, often in a passive-aggressive manner, displaying a subconscious that holds others, perhaps the world, in contempt. From “for the first time in my life, I am proud of my country” to “I think I was like most Americans, pretty oblivious to the life of military families, sort of taking it for granted” to now belittling disabled children and treating them like they are a joke.

Every attempt to promote Obama is accompanied by a slam of Bush. Every attempt to promote Michelle is accompanied by a slam of America or, recently Laura Bush, inferring that she did nothing for military families (Michelle’s “adopted cause”), when in fact, Laura worked for the military and their families in countless ways.

Part of it is that, as the WSJ puts it, “these days the reporting seems to reflect an assumption that if the Obamas haven’t done something, nobody else has, either.” Part of is open contempt, part of it is projection. And part of it is passive-aggressiveness, perhaps stemming from their ideology of class conflict.

Whatever the reason, if you listen closely, you will hear that practically everything they say includes either an explicit or implicit disparagement of someone. Perhaps most people (their supporters) don’t yet notice it because it is always buried in happy hopey-changey talk, but eventually, probably not so long from now, that will wear thin, and people will recognize them for the abusive jerks that they are.

I saw this at Secondhand Smoke, and posted about it here. I cannot tell you how angry this makes me, but it fits right in with his complete and utter lack of respect for the dignity of human life. For him, retarded people are just a joke to make, better off for them if they were aborted like the 90% of them who never see the light of day. Medical waste that didn’t get taken care of.

I did a little work with Special Olympics in college (not a lot, really, I’m no hero here), and my nephew is retarded. My great-aunt was, too. I can tell you that President Obama couldn’t hold a candle to them.

Most of what I’m thinking about him this morning is neither Christian nor something that is printable in a nice forum like yours, Anchoress.

By the way, at that link above, I’ve got the video embedded. It’s on YouTube – for now. We’ll see if it stays.

Outraged? Yes. Surprised? Come on, is anyone surprised? I doubt it.

The guy is an arrogant, contemptuous, disrespectful, clueless, classless, anti-life fool and thug.

America had a choice between –
“Children with special needs inspire a special love. To the families of special-needs children all across this country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters. I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.”

    – and a guy who worked against providing medical care to children born alive during what were intended to be abortions. And many in his party expressed the attitude during the campaign that the kind of folks who participate in Special Olympics would be better off aborted.

If he had a good sense of humor, he would have brought a teleprompter out with him. That would have been funny. But when you have put yourself on a pedestal like he has, it’s hard to poke fun at yourself.

Yes, Anchoress, that first update IS satire. You must have read it fast. The whole quote is “With the selection of Joe Biden as his Vice President and the appointment of Tim Geithner to Treasury, this president has done more to advance the cause of the developmentally disabled in America than has any other president in the history of the United States.”

    I laughed.

When I meet people who think that it’s better to abort than allow the “tragedy” of life for a person with disabilities, I always remind them: Disabilites can come later. I have two relatives who were born perfectly whole. One had an illness at age 12 that caused brain damage; another was an Honors student until a car accident.

What disturbs me is that even those who have loved ones with disabilities feel they must defend them by showing their “usefulness”. This one works in a grocery store; that one is good with children. There’s an insidious view of people as “meatbags” who are disposable if they’re not useful.

To me, the most troubling aspect of O’s remark about Special Olympics is that such a thought pops into his unguarded mind. I’m sure that in jr. high or high school–many, many years ago–I could have easily indulged in such “humor”, if, indeed, there had been a Special Olympics then. But since making a slow journey from pro-”choice” to pro-life, I have had ample opportunity to consider the gifts of Special Olympic athletes. They have perseverance and courage that puts me to shame. Their parents and coaches, too. O should study and emulate them. Not mock them.

The Democratic Party has revealed itself to be completely incompetent, divisive, juvenile, unethical, etc.

They found a youthful face, a relatively new Politician to run for President under the term ‘change’. Who has turned out to be completely unprepared for the position he fills, offering the most unattractive divisive expression, with weak forms of socialist policy.

After years of unethical Media manipulation, debasing some admirable efforts by the Republican President, Democrats have grown their power with overt efforts in slander.

The Democratic Partisans hatred for others, a partisan bigotry against other fellow Americans has driven their efforts.

Now they have the control in Washington, and we see a disgraceful joke on a daily basis.

Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Clinton, Boxer, Conyers, Murtha, Dodd, Kerry, Obey, Rangel, etc., are all corrupt, misguided, manipulative, partisans pushing a disastrous collectivism for their own partisan greed.

And the MSM, including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, Time, Newsweek, Rollingstone, MTV, VHI, the Comedy Chanel, PBS, NPR, WAPO, NY TIMES, etc., etc., are still pushing gross levels of deceit to aid this disastrous Democratic Monopoly in Washington.

It is going to get much worse, before it gets better…

One can only hope the vast majority of the American public returns a needed check to the madness this 2010.

Disappointing, but unfortunately expected, that no one from the Kennedy’s has spoken up about this yet, considering their extremely close association with the Special Olympics.

After spending time being assailed on the Politico, I have come to the conclusion that the 48% are still not “ready to make nice”. The Left was so insulting and demonizing to President Bush, and the leftists posting there were astonished that Obama was being called out on the extreme double standard. It has been too short a period of time for the Right to forget the Left’s reprehensible public treatment of Bush so quickly (e.g., Reid calling Bush a “liar” etc). Obama and his administration is merely getting the the treatment in reverse, and are now finding out how corrosive it can be to the soul. And, I do not think Obama has the same intestinal fortitude to push on as President Bush.
