Jesus as Rabbi

UPDATE: Feb 9, 09

Lois Tverberg is in the process of changing to a new website. Check it out here:

I am excited to have found Lois Tverberg’s blog! If you are not sure who she is, she is the founder of engedi resources ( Her latest post gives a defense of calling Jesus, “rabbi.” This is a topic that has come up in the last couple weeks as I have been studying Jesus in his Jesus context. Take time and read her post: Can We Call Jesus Rabbi?

Kurt, thanks for the link, great article and sounds like an interesting book.
I think the Jewish context of Jesus is facinating as well, many authors explore it of course, but one that comes to mind that could be worth checking out would be Sanders. I don’t always agree with his conclusions, but his study of Judaism and the primary texts is quite important nonetheless.

I have both heard good and bad about Sanders. Good for pushing us towards a ‘jewish jesus,’ bad theological outcomes… I will eventually get to him i am sure! Thanks man!

I love the blog man! I am struggling with many of the same issues. I am looking forward to reading more in the future from you.

Studying the Jewish context of our faith and mainly Jesus is something that I am willfully undertaking at this point of time. I wonder why I didn’t start here in the first place. Cool blog link. I will be adding it to my blog list. I found the post on “would Jesus go green?” interesting as well. Answers alot of the things I am thinking about!

Ray, thanks for your complements… This is a space for people like you and i who are trying to figure out what it looks like to be a follower of our Rabbi Jesus! Keep coming back to keep our dialogues alive. I know you will be a great voice to add to our conversations!

Glad as always to continue our dialogues. Just so you know, this blog will end soon and she will be starting a new blog based on a new website… see her latest post for details.
