Day 62 of 90: Moksha Yoga, Practice

Day 62 of 90: Moksha Yoga, Practice September 10, 2013

Day 62 of 90 straight days of hot yoga at Moksha Yoga LA and today’s practice is reminder of our daily practice.  What ever you choose to explore as your practice, whether it be ACIM, meditation, hiking, Pilates, Yoga, Prayer, or repeating the OUR FATHER, let it be a daily one.  When we have a daily practice, we have a foundation, we have support, we have something to go to when things are rolling along in our lives or falling over.  If I have learned one important thing with practicing everyday it is just that, practice, practice, practice.  Practice is not so much about being perfect, as it is to help us surrender to the bigger self. The Divine.

I had the incredible opportunity last year of meeting Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and watching him speak to a crowd gathered at LACMA, for my good friend Robert Taylor’s book signing. Someone raised their hand and asked the Archbishop about his thoughts on crime in Mexico, and what he can do. He smiled big, then laughed, and explained, “I laugh because you expect the Dalai Lama and me to to do the work, and that is the problem, you don’t want to do the work for yourself, so you throw money at it, and it is still there, so you put it on us. What can you do? We need you to do the work, we need you to pray, and meditate, take action.”  That is the importance for all of us to do the inner work.  Not just do it and tell people about how spiritual we are or how we are not spiritual.  This planet is given to us, we must take care of her. We do that through our practice first. By taking care of us first, then our families, then the community, and then the planet. How you are effects the rest of us.

Today’s practice with teacher Joe, was a gift. The gift was to look at the importance of practice.  Yoga to me is not about how flexible you are, or not. It is not about the fancy clothes, or how you look. Those are benefits of the practice. The gift of the practice is your connection to the whole self, the unity of mind, body, and spirit.  That is a everyday experience.  Yoga is inner work, inner play, which effects the alignment. Most poses turn inward, rotate inward, and it helps with the expression outward. I have noticed the practice become simple, subtle, and intuitive. When I show up on my mat, it is like a surgeon showing up for surgery.  It is a skill, takes patience, breath, focus, and compassion for self.

Just like your practice. Practice is building a skill. Every skill takes patience, breath, and compassion. Joe our teacher said today, “When you fall that is great, it means you are entering the unknown.” Practice, practice, practice.

On to day 63…Namaste…
