In the past nine days, there have been three very large demonstrations in Hong Kong against Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s handling of a legislative bill of extradition to China. The bill would require the courts of Hong Kong to extradite someone accused of a crime committed in mainland China. Citizens of Hong Kong fear that such a law could be gravely misused against them since courts in China are not as fair as they are in Hong Kong. But first… Read more

Today, U.S. President Donald Trump again called The New York Times and The Washington Post–the two best newspapers in this land–“the enemy of the people.” The New York Times, founded in 1851, has been awarded 127 Pulitzer Prizes. They have 1,300 reporters on their staff, with many of them being investigative reporters. The Los Angeles Times, the third biggest newspaper in the country, has said that The New York Times has twice as many reporters as they do. As a… Read more

Thirty-five year old Gary Woodland–a three time winner on the PGA Tour, but without a major–won the U.S. Open just now by three strokes over defending champion Brooks Koepka with a 13-under par 271 total. He started the day at 11 under par for 54 holes with a one stroke lead over 2013 U.S. Open winner Justin Rose. Most armchair quarterbacks probably thought Rose had the best the chance to win. But he survived that far only leaning on his… Read more

The U.S. Open is being played this week at my favorite golf course–the beautiful Pebble Beach Golf Links nestled along the Pacific Ocean at Monterey Peninsula, California. Gary Woodlands, who has never won one of the four major championships in golf (Masters, PGA, U.S. Open, British Open), has a one stroke lead over 2013 U.S. Open winner Justin Rose. Here are the leaders with one round left to play, tomorrow: Gary Woodland -11 under par 202 Justin Rose at -10… Read more

Keith Giles is a terrific writer here at Patheos. He has written a post entitled “Let’s Put the Church Out of Business.” He criticizes the church being too much business and not enough about living the Christian life. I highly recommend reading this post. It reflects sentiments I’ve had about the church for nearly fifty years. Keith has written books about this and dozens of blog posts. He has a fun, animated video in this post that he and his… Read more

Benjamin Netanyahu won the election for Prime Minister of the State of Israel on April 9. But it didn’t really matter. For the first time in Israel’s history, the prime minister could not field a coalition government. What does that mean? Israel is a democratic country. It operates with a parliament that is similar to the U.S. Congress, yet different. The U.S. is pretty much a two-party system: Republican Party and Democrat Party. It also has two parliamentary houses: the… Read more

Yesterday, President Donald Trump was interviewed on television in the Oval Office by George Stephanopoulos. The ABC News Chief Anchor asked the president whether or not during the upcoming presidential campaign he would accept from a foreign government “dirt”–derogatory information–about his political opponent he’d be running against or turn it over to the FBI. Trump answered, “I think maybe you do both. I think you might want to listen, there isn’t anything wrong with listening. If somebody called from a country,… Read more

Today, President Donald Trump was interviewed on the finance news TV channel CNBC. Trump claimed that China has “lost 15 to 20 trillion dollars in value since the day I was elected.” That is so far from the truth that this man looks like he is headed for a psychiatric ward. Maybe the DC lawyer and constant critic of President Trump, George Conway–who is married to one of Trump’s primary advisors, Kellyanne Conway–is right. Conway tweeted yesterday about President Trump,… Read more

David Friedman, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, said two days ago that Israel has a right to annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank. He said specifically, “Under certain circumstances, I think Israel has a right to retain some, but unlikely all, of the West Bank.” Not according to international law. The UN has many resolutions that declare otherwise. Friedman and envoy Jason Greenblatt have been working with Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, in preparing a peace plan for Israelis… Read more

Superstar Rory McIlroy shot a blistering 61 to win the RBC Canadian Open today by seven strokes over Webb Simpson and Shane Lowery at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It was the 16th PGA Tour title for the lucky Irishman. I say lucky because Rory said after winning, “I’ve been marking my ball with a loonie all week, and it might have to cross the border and come with me.” A loonie is a Canadian… Read more
