Today, President Donald Trump responded once again to the worst shooting in modern American history which occurred Sunday night in Las Vegas. He was leaving the White House for a trip to Puerto Rico when a reporter asked him about the shooting which claimed the lives of 59 people and injured 500 others. Sixty-four year old Stephen Paddock opened fire on thousands of concert-goers from the windows of a 32nd-floor hotel room.  A SWAT team found the shooter after about 20 minutes. They found him dead in the room.

“Look, we have a tragedy,” President Trump said.  “What happened is, in many ways, a miracle. The police department, they’ve done such an incredible job. And we’ll be talking about gun laws as time goes on. But I do have to say, how quickly the police department was able to get in was really very much of a miracle. They’ve done an amazing job.”  He also talked of Paddock, saying, ““He was a sick man, a demented man. A lot of problems, I guess. We’re looking into him very, very seriously. But we’re dealing with a very, very sick individual.”

When Trump mentioned that we’d be “talking about gun laws,” it caused concern amongst people who care about the Constitution and the 2nd Amendment.

As IJR reported, Trump has a complicated relationship with gun owners.

In the past, the president has been critical of NRA supporters and those who “refuse even limited restrictions” on firearms laws, as he wrote in his 2000 book, “The America We Deserve,” even calling out people who “walk the NRA line.”

However, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said, “the only person with blood on their hands is that of the shooter. And this isn’t a time for us to go after individuals or organizations. I think that we can have those policy conversations, but today is not that day.”
